NongHyup posts record earnings in 2018
NongHyup Financial Group posted record earnings in 2018 on the back of an increase in interest income and brokerage commissions, the holding company said, Thursday. The group's consolidated net profit reached 1.2 trillion won ($1.1 billion) last year, up nearly 42 percent from the year before. It was the first time that its annual earnings exceeded the 1 trillion won mark.
Unemployment hits 9-year high
The country's unemployment rate hit a nine-year high of 4.5 percent in January, especially among those in their 40s and 50s, amid job cuts in manufacturing, according to Statistics Korea, Wednesday. The January rate climbed 0.8 percentage points from January 2018, with the number of the unemployed increasing 204,000 to 1.22 million, the highest January figure in 19 years.
