Korean traditional honey cookies, known as "yakgwa," have become the flagship product of over 53 Korean desserts and finger foods to be showcased at a global food expo in Germany next month, according to SPC Samlip, Thursday.
The subsidiary of Korean major readymade food maker SPC Group said it decided to front the traditional confectionery at ANUGA in Koln on Oct. 7 to 11.
The decision came as an increaing number of consumers worldwide are showing interest in yakgwa, according to the company.
SPC will showcase 12 differerent kinds of yakgwa at ANUGA, including yakgwa tarts, modernized yakgwa cookies, mini yakgwa and royal honey yakgwa. The company said it will promote yakgwa as a signature "K-dessert."
SPC will also showcase other Korean desserts like different flavors of steamed buns called "hoppang" in Korean, as well as rice cakes and baked goods. Noodles, dumplings and hot dogs that are made for vegans will also be among the food maker's lineup of readymade products. The company is showcasing 53 products at the German expo.
The world's biggest annual expo for food and beverage products, ANUGA is expected to attract more than 100,000 visitors as well as 8,000 companies from 100 countries.
SPC Samlip, one of the major players in Korea's bakery market, said it will promote its key food techniques and products to the global market as well as raise awareness of Korean desserts.
The food maker currently exports around 250 products to 61 countries, including the United States, Australia, Hong Kong and Europe. Hoppang stuffed with spicy chicken and kimchi cheese are among 25 different kinds of buns that are becoming increasingly popular overseas, according to the food maker.
