Hyundai Glovis signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) last Friday with Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, Sinan County and LS Electric to develop power grid models using new and renewable energies, so as to fulfill carbon neutrality pledges and enhance utilization efficiency.
The logistics unit of Hyundai Motor Group said Monday that it plans to build a used battery energy storage system (UBESS) to supply electricity to the southwestern county's islanders in an environmentally friendly method.
Residents of some islands in Sinan County have used internal combustion engines to generate electricity. Hyundai Glovis emphasized that UBESS will enable them to reduce carbon emissions and save energy and resources.
The company also plans to support the construction of a hybrid power generation complex that can produce both electricity and hydrogen by using solar power, wind, hydrogen and used electric vehicle (EV) batteries.
"The recent MOU was meaningful as we have been able to contribute to revitalizing Sinan County's economy," a Hyundai Glovis official said. "In line with the growth of the used EV batteries market, we will actively discover other business models reusing EV batteries."
