Hyundai Engineering has joined hands with USNC, an American company specializing in small module nuclear power plants with fourth generation ultra-high temperature reactors, to solidify its position as a global leader in the micro modular reactor (MMR) sector. \
The company said Sunday it signed an agreement on Aug. 26 to purchase major equipment in connection with the "Canada Chalk River MMR Demonstration Project.
Hyundai Engineering will supply machinery, equipment and materials for processing radioactive materials in the construction of the project and provide purchase support services under the deal.
Prior to this, the engineering company signed a contract on detailed design to promote the MMR demonstration project in June.
Canada Chalk River MMR Demonstration Project is currently the most commercialized among fourth-generation reactors. As Hyundai Engineering is attracting attention in the global nuclear power plant market with its safety technology, it plans to make every effort in carrying out the project. The two companies aim to complete the construction and start commercial operation by 2026.
Hyundai Engineering also plans to pursue the development of high-power multi-purpose module nuclear power plants. Representatives from the engineering company paid a visit to the completion ceremony of the USNC MMR nuclear plant in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, and signed a business agreement to develop related technologies.
"Based on our 10 years of technological research and cooperation with USNC on high temperature gas in 2012, the construction project of the fourth-generation, ultra-small module nuclear power plants has finally come to fruition. As MMR is attracting attention as a key axis of realizing carbon neutrality, we will take the lead in developing MMR-related technologies and promoting business by mobilizing all of our capabilities," a Hyundai Engineering official said.
