Merck Korea, a leading science and technology company, announced the winners of this year's Merck Award and Merck Young Scientists Award during the International Meeting of Information Displays (IMID) 2022 in Busan, Wednesday.
Professor Noh Yong-young of Postech, the winner of the Merck Award, reported innovative research results on the development of semiconducting materials for backplane TFT technology of OLED displays.
The development of high-performance p-type semiconductors and related TFTs is considered a technical challenge not only in the display industry but in the semiconductor industry due to the relative low hole mobility of most conventional semiconductors.
Noh developed the world's first, high-performance p-type TFT by using tin-based metal halide perovskites and copper iodine-based metal halide transparent semiconductors.
Professor Kang Suk-ju of Sogang University, the winner of the Merck Young Scientist Award, is one of the leading experts in the fields of display image, video signal processing and artificial intelligence.
Based on various experiences in related fields, he has been pursuing innovations in image quality enhancement and restoration, next-generation display systems, artificial intelligence lightweight technology and real-time hardware implementation.
The Head of Display Solutions at Merck KGaA Michael Heckmeier also delivered a keynote speech under the theme Advancing Display, Advancing Life.
"As Merck is celebrating its 33rd year in Korea, the electronics industry, which is led by displays and semiconductors, is advancing rapidly around the globe due to the growing demand for digital devices and technologies," Managing Director of Merck Korea Kim Woo-kyu said.
The Merck award was established in 2004 and expanded with the addition of the Merck Young Scientist Award in 2006.
