RESTAURANT OF THE WEEK Everything about HQ Bar is great

Because you can't stay in Seoul every weekend, this week's spotlighted restaurant is HQ Bar, a dank expat pub with an extensive food menu overlooking Busan's landmark Gwangalli Beach.

HQ is just one of those places where everyone ends up at some point. Its schedule is chock full of weekly events, food specials and some pretty strong live concerts — not to mention the breathtaking view from its windows.

Although it is best-known for serving memory-erasing drinks, HQ also has an extensive food menu, offering pizza, Mexican food, wings and so on. One patron mentioned that the wings and the macaroni & cheese skillet are particularly standout dishes.

HQ has taco Tuesdays, wing Wednesdays and trivia night Thursdays featuring a different host each week. There are also less-frequent events, including darts tournaments and a monthly board game meetup, with the next one on Sept. 15. Fridays and Saturdays usually have the big events offering a good chance to socialize, including live music and DJ dance parties. It's also a sports pub and shows various international games, including rugby and UFC.

The bar just celebrated its 10th anniversary, and before that its owners marked the one-year anniversary of taking over the Basement, a renowned live music venue that had been a staple in the city for the past 22 years.

HQ Bar is closed on Mondays. On Tuesday to Saturday it opens at 7 p.m., with closing times getting progressively later as the week progresses. On Sundays, it opens early at 5 p.m. The Chuseok holiday doesn't seem to affect its hours, although HQ has been known to close due to the occasional typhoon.
