’China equips J-20 stealth fighter with own engine’

China’s next generation stealth fighter jet, J-20, will be equipped with the engines developed by the country, Chinese language newspaper, Wenweipo, reported Sunday.

“Yes,” said Zhu Heping, deputy president of the People's Liberation Army's (PLA) Air Force Command College a day earlier, when asked J-20 fighter jet is equipped with Chinese engine. Zhu is also a delegate to the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).

This is the first time that a ranking military officer has ever confirmed that China has been developing an engine for J-20, according to Wenweipo.

However, deputy president Zhu did not confirm whether it is WS-15 engine or not, nor did not give a clear-cut answer on whether the jet will be put into operation during the latter half of next year.

“I don’t know,” said Zhu, when asked whether a large military plane will make its maiden flight this year. “However, all the things progress as planned.”

China revealed the J-20 in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, in January, 2011, when the test flight coincided with U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates' visit to Beijing.

Meanwhile, Luo Yuan, major general of the People’s Liberation Army, said that the Varyag, the first Chinese aircraft carrier, has been in test operation, and added when it will be deployed depends on the outcome of the test.

Major Gen. Luo said that China will decide on the number of aircraft carriers depending on “Chinese economic capability and demand of national defense,” when asked how many aircraft it will possess.

Major Gen. Luo also insisted that the international community will not need to fear even though China would build an additional aircraft carriers. “There has been no ‘theory of threat’ although the U.S. has owned 11 aircraft carriers,” Luo said. “As a result, other countries would not need to worry about the ‘theory of threat’ of China.”

Military sources said that Varyag will be launched on the occasion of the anniversary of China’s People’s Liberation Army on Aug. 1 after a series of test operations and its launching ceremony is expected to be held around the National Day falling on Oct. 1.

The Varyag is expected to be operated on the South China Sea under the direction of the Central Military Commission.
