Middle school girl found dead off apartment in Daegu

By Lee Ji-eun

A middle school girl was found dead in Daegu, after apparently jumping off an apartment building, police said Saturday.

The 15-year-old student, surnamed Jang, jumped off the building in Hwawon-eup, Dalseong-gu, Daegu, near her house at 00:55, police said, quoting a classmate and her family.

Jang chatted with her boyfriend on her phone until shortly before jumping and left a note saying, “I am sorry to all” on the wall of the rooftop of the 16-story apartment block, according to police.

The boyfriend asked Jang’s friend to check on what happened to her as she abruptly stopped talking after counting down “10, nine, eight, seven” during their conversation.

“Just three weeks ago, I persuaded her not to jump off another building and walked her home,” said her boyfriend, identified as Kim.

“As a smart girl at school, she seems to have fallen into depression at her father’s recent remarriage,” a police officer said. Police are investigating the circumstances behind her death, talking to family members, teachers and classmates.
