The main opposition Democratic Party (DP) announced Thursday it will seek the impeachment of senior prosecutors involved in investigations into party leader Lee Jae-myung, accusing them of abuse of power.

Rep. Min Hyung-bae told reporters that the party has begun drafting impeachment motions this week.

"Some of the impeachment drafts were already prepared during the 21st National Assembly so it won't take a long time," he said.

The DP plans to impeach four senior prosecutors in charge of investigations into various corruption allegations against Lee, including a scandal surrounding underwear manufacturer Ssangbangwool Group's alleged illegal remittance to North Korea.

The DP has accused the prosecution of attempting to fabricate evidence to implicate Lee.

Lee has also been accused of bribery and other charges stemming from his time as the mayor of Seongnam, south of Seoul, from 2014-2018. (Yonhap)
