South Korea's kimchi exports last year reached a record-high of $159.9 million with a 19.2 million surplus, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.
농림축산식품부에 의하면 지난 해 한국의 김치 수출이 1,920만 달러 흑자를 내며 사상 최고치인 1억 5,990달러를 기록했다.
It's the first time for the nation to see a surplus in kimchi trade since 2009. South Korea also imports kimchi mainly from China.
2009년 이래로 한국이 김치 무역에서 흑자를 낸 것은 처음이다. 한국 역시 주로 중국에서 김치를 수입해온다.
According to the agriculture ministry, kimchi exports have grown annually 18 percent in the past five years.
농식품부에 의하면 지난 5년 간 김치 수출은 연간 18% 증가해왔다.
Over the past five years, the number of importing nations has increased from 61 countries in 2016 to 89 countries last year.
지난 5년 동안 (한국에서 김치를) 수입하는 국가의 숫자는 2016년 61개국에서 지난 해 89개국으로 증가했다.
The popularity of Korean pop music and dramas overseas is believed to be one of the factors that boosted the growth of kimchi exports as overseas hallyu fans' interest in Korean food has grown.
해외 한류 팬들의 한국 음식에 대한 관심이 증가했기에 한국 대중 음악 및 드라마의 해외 인기가 김치 수출의 성장을 신장시킨 요인 중 하나일 것으로 추정된다.
The agriculture ministry said it would continue to make efforts to increase kimchi exports while putting an equal emphasis on discovering other food and agricultural products that can be exported.
농식품부는 수출될 수 있는 다른 식품 및 농업 제품 개발에 동일한 중점을 두는 한편 김치 수출도 증가시킬 수 있도록 지속적으로 노력할 것이라고 말했다.
