Fitness junkies locked out of gyms, commuters fearful of public transit, and families going stir-crazy inside their homes during the coronavirus pandemic have created a boom in bicycle sales unseen in decades.
코로나바이러스 대유행 동안 헬스장에 가지 못하는 헬스중독자들, 대중교통을 무서워하는 통근자들, 집에 갇혀 미쳐버릴 것 같은 가족들이 수십 년간 보지 못한 자전거 판매 급증 현상을 만들어냈다.
In the United States, bicycle aisles at mass merchandisers like Walmart and Target have been swept clean, and independent shops are doing a brisk business and are selling out of affordable "family" bikes.
미국에서 월마트나 타겟과 같은 대형 유통업체의 자전거 판매구역은 싹쓸이 당했고, 독립 매장들은 활발한 영업을 하며 저렴한 '가족용' 자전거를 전부 매진시키고 있다.
"Bicycle sales over the past two months saw their biggest spike in the U.S. since the oil crisis of the 1970s," said Jay Townley, who analyzes cycling industry trends at Human Powered Solutions.
휴먼파워솔루션즈에서 자전거 업계 동향을 분석하는 제이 타운리는 "지난 두 달 동안 미국에서의 자전거 판매는 1970년대 석유파동 이후 가장 큰 폭의 증가세를 보였다"고 말했다.
"People quite frankly have panicked, and they're buying bikes like toilet paper," Townley said, referring to the rush to buy essentials like toilet paper and hand sanitizer that stores saw at the beginning of the pandemic.

The trend is mirrored around the globe, as cities better known for car-clogged streets, like Manila and Rome, install bike lanes to accommodate surging interest in cycling. Bike shop owners in the Philippine capital say demand is stronger than at Christmas.
이 같은 현상은 세계 곳곳에서도 똑같이 일어나고 있는데, 마닐라나 로마처럼 교통이 혼잡한 거리로 유명한 도시들은 자전거 전용도로를 설치하여 자전거에 대한 급증하는 관심을 수용하고 있다. 필리핀 수도 마닐라의 자전거 가게 주인들은 크리스마스 때보다 수요가 더 많다고 말한다.
The bicycle craze has led to shortages, particularly in the U.S., which relies on China for about 90 percent of its bicycles. Production there was largely shut down due to the coronavirus and is just resuming.
