Korean Air Lines Co., South Korea's biggest carrier by sales, said Thursday it will reopen dozens of its international routes next month amid signs the coronavirus epidemic may have passed its peak.
코로나바이러스 감염병이 정점을 지난 징후가 보이는 가운데 국내 최대 항공사 대한항공은 다음 달 수십 개의 국제선 노선을 재개할 계획이라고 목요일 밝혔다.
Korean Air plans to resume flights on 19 international routes on June 1 as the country's top flag carrier strives to offset a sharp decline in passenger travel demand with an increased demand for cargo deliveries, the company said in a statement.
한국 최고의 국적 항공사인 대한항공은 급감한 여객 여행 수요를 화물 운송 수요 증가로 상쇄하고자 노력함에 따라 6월 1일부터 19개의 국제선 노선 항공편 운항을 재개할 계획이라고 성명을 통해 밝혔다.
The reopening routes include Washington, D.C., Seattle, Vancouver, Toronto, Frankfurt, Singapore, Beijing and Kuala Lumpur, the statement said.
재개되는 노선은 워싱턴 DC, 시애틀, 밴쿠버, 토론토, 프랑크푸르트, 싱가포르, 베이징, 쿠알라룸푸르 노선을 포함한다.
The move is aimed at preparing for increased travel demand after countries ease their entry restrictions on incoming passengers to stem the spread of the COVID-19 virus, it said.
이는 각국이 코로나19 감염병 확산을 막기 위해 실시한 입국 제한을 완화한 후 증가하는 여행 수요에 대비하려는 조치라고 사측은 설명했다.
Korean Air currently offers 55 flights a week on 13 international routes, sharply down from more than 900 flights on 110 long-haul routes before the airline industry was hit by the coronavirus. Starting in June, 146 flights on 32 international routes will be available.
대한항공은 현재 국제선 13개 노선에 주당 55편의 항공편을 제공하고 있는데 이는 항공업계가 코로나바이러스에 의한 타격을 받기 전에 운행하던 110개 장거리 노선의 900여 항공편에 비해 많이 줄어든 수치다. 6월부터는 국제선 32개 노선에 146편의 항공편을 이용할 수 있게 된다.
It has suspended more than 90 percent of flights on international routes since late March, as an increasing number of countries have closed their borders or have taken other measures related to incoming passengers.
국경을 폐쇄하거나 입국 승객과 관련된 기타 조치를 취하는 국가가 증가하자 대한항공은 3월 말부터 국제선 노선의 90% 이상의 운항을 중단시킨 상태다.
As part of self-rescue efforts, Korean Air had 70 percent of its 20,000-strong workforce take paid leave for six months beginning Thursday and is in the process of selling non-core assets to secure operating costs.
대한항공은 자구책의 일환으로 전체 직원 2만 명 중 70%가 목요일부터 6개월간 유급휴가를 받으며 운영비 확보를 위해 비핵심 자산을 매각하는 절차를 밟고 있다.
