The opening of the 2020 Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Festival is just around the corner.
2020 화천산천어축제의 개막이 코앞으로 다가왔다.
The annual ice fishing festival is scheduled to take place for 23 days from Jan. 11 to Feb. 2 on a frozen river in the Gangwon Province county of Hwacheon, about 120 kilometers northeast of Seoul.
서울 북쪽에서 120㎞ 떨어진 강원도 화천군의 얼어붙은 강에서 펼쳐지는 이 연례행사는 이달 11일부터 다음 달 2일까지 23일간 펼쳐진다.
The world famous festival was originally scheduled to kick off on Jan. 4 but was delayed by one week due to unseasonably warm weather.
세계적으로 유명한 이 축제는 원래 4일에 개막할 예정이었지만, 계절에 맞지 않게 따뜻한 날씨로 인해 개막이 한 주 미뤄졌다.
Approximately 20,000 fishing holes will be pierced through the ice over a 2.1-kilometer area about the size of 24 soccer fields, and about 200 tons of "sancheoneo" will be released during the festival.
축구장 24개 크기인 2.1㎞ 길이의 공간에 2만 개의 얼음낚시 구멍이 뚫리며 200톤가량의 산천어가 축제 기간 동안 방생된다.
Sancheoneo is a species of mountain trout known to live only in very clean fresh water.
산천어는 '산 송어'의 일종으로 아주 맑은 물에서만 서식하는 것으로 알려져 있다.
It will also feature some 60 kinds of programs, including barehanded fishing, a sledding contest, bobsleigh and ice football.
올해 축제는 맨손 낚시, 썰매 타기, 봅슬레이, 얼음 축구 등 60여 개의 다양한 프로그램들이 준비될 예정이다.
Launched in 2003, the event was chosen as the nation's best festival by the culture ministry in 2010 and has developed into one of the world's four major winter festivals.
2003년부터 시작된 화천산천어축제는 정부로부터 지난 2010년 국내 최우수축제로 선정됐고, 세계 4대 겨울축제로 발전했다.
Many local and foreign news organizations have introduced the magnificent scene of people trying to catch fish through holes in the vast frozen river.
국내 및 해외 언론사들도 얼어붙은 넓은 강에 뚫린 구멍들을 통해서 물고기를 잡아 올리는 사람들의 멋진 광경들을 해마다 보도해왔다.
In 2011, a leading global news organization introduced the festival as one of the world's seven wonders of winter.
지난 2011년에는 한 해외 주요 언론사가 화천산천어축제를 '세계 겨울철 7대 불가사의'로 소개하기도 했다.
Last year, the festival drew 1.84 million tourists during its 23-day run, marking an increase of 6 percent from the previous year.
23일간 펼쳐지는 화천산천어축제는 지난해 184만 명이 찾았고, 이는 전년보다 6% 증가한 숫자다.
The number of foreign visitors also set a new record of 146,000, with some 20,000 of them being individual tourists from about 40 countries. (Yonhap)
지난해 외국인 방문객의 수도 14만6천명으로 신기록을 달성했다. 이중 2만명 가량은 40개국에서 온 개인 관광객들이다.
