When people think of traveler's insurance, many tend to picture reimbursements for accidents while touring overseas. But the coverage scopes and the variety of insurance are much greater than people think.
여행자보험에 대해 생각할 때 많은 사람들은 해외여행 시 발생하는 사고에 대한 보상금을 떠올린다. 그러나 보장범위와 보험의 종류는 사람들이 생각하는 것보다 훨씬 크고 다양하다.

가장 중요한 사항은 해외에서 발생하는 질병과 부상에 대한 의료비 보상인데, 국내에서 가입한 의료보험은 이를 적용하지 않는다.
When preparing to travel abroad, one might notice there are a few ways to get free travelers insurance, when purchasing travel-related services including package tours, flight booking, currency exchange and roaming services.
해외여행 계획을 세우다 보면 패키지여행, 항공편 예약, 환전, 휴대전화 로밍서비스와 같은 여행 관련 서비스를 구매할 때, 무료 해외여행보험(결합 해외여행보험)들이 있다는 것을 알게 된다.
Having a free insurance plan is better than not having one at all, but people need to realize the coverage is to a minimum, lacking in most aspects, so experts advise people to purchase additional insurance before heading abroad.
결합 해외여행보험이 보험이 없는 것보다는 낫지만, 대개 최소한의 보장만 제공되고 보상 한도도 턱없이 부족한 경우가 많다. 따라서 전문가들은 여행자들에게 추가적인 여행보험을 별도로 가입하라고 조언한다.
According to the Korea Insurance Research Institute, 30 percent of free insurances do not cover overseas medical costs, while among the plans that do, 36 percent have a maximum reimbursement of 1 million won.
보험연구원에 따르면 결합 해외여행보험의 경우 해외 의료비를 보장해주지 않는 상품이 전체의 30%였고, 보장 한도가 100만 원 이내인 경우가 36%에 달했다.
When needing emergency medical procedures, such plans do not or hardly cover overseas medical expenses.
응급실 치료비로 큰 비용이 발생할 경우 보장받을 수 없거나 보장이 충분치 않았다.
Most of the free coverage plans are provided by travel and telecommunications companies when customers book their overseas services, but they fail to give specific details of the coverage, leaving travelers in the dark.
이러한 무료 해외여행보험은 대부분 여행사와 통신사가 해외 서비스를 구매할 때 제공하지만, 구체적인 보장 범위를 알리지 않아 많은 여행자들이 보험에 대해 제대로 알지 못하는 경우가 많은 것으로 나타났다.
"There needs to be stronger regulations that make it mandatory for firms to explain in detail the insurance coverage for travelers. And there need to be ways to educate customers on the variety of insurances and their coverage," an official from the institute said.
보험연구원 관계자는 "결합 여행자보험의 경우 여행자에게 보험 관련 정보가 충분히 전달되도록 설명 의무를 강화해 보장 내용에 대한 소비자의 인식을 확대할 필요가 있다"고 전했다.
