Police said Friday they had apprehended two people suspected of hacking into the mobile phones of celebrities, including actor Joo Jin-mo, and threatening to leak confidential details.
금요일 경찰은 배우 주진모를 비롯한 연예인들의 휴대전화를 해킹하고 기밀을 누설하겠다고 협박한 혐의로 두 명의 용의자를 체포했다고 밝혔다.
The two suspects ― one a 40-year-old surnamed Park ― allegedly hacked the mobile phones of eight celebrities and blackmailed them. Five of the victims apparently paid the two 610 million won (US$505,176).
40대 박 모 씨를 비롯한 두 용의자는 연예인 8명의 휴대전화를 해킹해 협박한 혐의를 받고 있다. 피해자 중 5명의 연예인이 이들에게 6억1천만원을 보냈다.
Investigators at the Cyber Security Department of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency said they had sent the case to the prosecution for further investigation.
서울경찰청 사이버안전과는 추가 수사를 위해 이 사건을 검찰에 송치했다고 밝혔다.
Officers also said they were in talks with the authorities in China to track down potential accomplices there, based on witnesses statements and forensic analyses of the phones.
경찰은 또한 목격자들의 진술과 휴대전화의 포렌식 분석에 근거하여 다른 공범들을 추적하기 위해 중국 당국과 협의 중이라고 말했다.
Earlier this year, Joo issued an apology after images of text messages he sent to an acquaintances went viral. The circulated images showed conversations mentioning certain women.
배우 주진모는 올해 초 지인에게 보낸 문자메시지 화면들이 인터넷상에 퍼지자 사과문을 냈다. 유포된 이미지에는 특정 여성들을 언급하는 대화가 담겨 있었다.
Police, meanwhile, said the suspects behind the phone hack weren't related to the so-called "Nth room case," in which 24-year-old Cho Ju-bin blackmailed women, including underaged girls, to perform gruesome sex acts and sold access to the videos and images in anonymous chat rooms.
한편 경찰은 연예인 휴대전화 해킹 용의자들이 미성년자를 비롯한 여성들을 협박해 소름 끼치는 성적 행위를 시키고 익명의 채팅방에서 이들의 영상과 사진을 판매한 이른바 'N번방 사건'과는 관련이 없다고 밝혔다.

현재 구금 중인 'N번방' 용의자 조주빈은 주진모의 휴대전화를 해킹한 게 자기 자신이라고 주장한 것으로 알려졌다.
