'Joker' explores nuances of iconic supervillain

DC Comics is famous for stories about superheroes fighting for good and defeating supervillains. But the new film "Joker" looks to explore the other side of the story.

DC코믹스는 나쁜 악당들과 맞서 싸우며 승리하는 슈퍼히어로들에 대한 원작으로 유명하다. 하지만 영화 ‘조커'는 이런 기존의 틀을 깨는 듯해 보인다.

Director Todd Philips shows things from the villain's perspective, showing what turned the Joker into the vicious character he became.

토드 필립스 감독은 조커가 악당이 되어가는 과정을 보여주며 악당의 입장에서 세상을 보여준다.

"Todd and I were striving for something unique. We wanted to create our own understanding of the character and his own history," actor Joaquin Phoenix, who played the Joker, said at a live video conference held at Yongsan CGV in Seoul, last month.

조커를 연기한 배우 호아킨 피닉스는 지난달 서울 용산 CGV에서 열린 라이브비디오컨퍼런스(화상 기자회견)에서 "토드와 나는 특별한 무언가를 만들고자 노력했다. 우리만의 해석이 담긴 새로운 조커를 만들고 그만의 이야기를 담고 싶었다"고 밝혔다.

The film aims to create a new, more nuanced image of the Joker and breathe life into the notorious criminal mastermind.

영화는 새롭고 더 미묘한 이미지의 조커를 만들어, 이미 악명 높은 최고의 악당인 그에게 새로운 생명을 불어넣는 것을 목표로 한다.

The film takes place in Gotham City in the 1980s, a city going through economically devastating times. Arthur struggles to make ends meet and take care of his mother.

이 영화는 경제가 엉망이 된 고담 시의 1980년대를 배경으로 한다. 아서 플렉(호아킨 피닉스)은 어머니를 돌보기 위해 고군분투하며 겨우 먹고 살 만큼만 벌고 있다.

He longs to be a standup comedian spreading happiness, as his mother nicknamed him "Happy," but barely holds onto his job as a professional clown who gets bullied. He is an outcast, socially awkward and has a strange medical condition leading him to burst into uncontrollable bouts of laughter.

그는 어머니가 자신을 ‘해피'라고 부르는 것처럼 행복을 전파하는 스탠드업 코미디언이 되기를 꿈꾸지만, 괴롭힘을 당하는 전문 광대라는 직업을 간신히 붙잡고 있다. 그는 따돌림을 받는 사회 부적응자일 뿐만 아니라 자신이 통제할 수 없는 웃음이 터져 나오는 희귀한 신체적 이상증세도 가지고 있다.

Despite his hope to be noticed and to spread joy, he has a bleak outlook on life, scrawling in his journal, "I hope my death makes more cents than my life." Being ridiculed and ignored he violently lashes out, through which he finally gets the spotlight he always wanted, as the Joker.

유명해져서 기쁨을 전파하고 싶은 희망에도 불구하고 아서는 자신의 일기에 ‘내 죽음이 내 삶보다 더 가치 있기를'이라고 낙서하는, 삶에 대한 어두운 전망을 갖고 있는 사람이다. 조롱당하고 무시받던 아서는 결국 ‘조커'가 되어 그가 항상 원하던 스포트라이트를 받는다.

Phoenix gives a stunning performance, creating an unprecedented depiction of the Joker. The transition from insecure, unstable Arthur to lunatic criminal the Joker is meticulously articulated through every move, especially using dance moves as an outward expression of his enjoyment of cruel acts of violence.

호아킨 피닉스는 조커를 전례없이 묘사하는 놀라운 연기를 선보인다. 불안하고 불안정한 아서로부터 미치광이 범죄자 조커로의 변화는 모든 행동을 통해 꼼꼼하게 설명되며, 특히 잔인한 폭력 행위에 대한 그의 즐거움을 겉으로 표현하기 위해 춤 동작을 사용한다.

On top of his transcendent acting, Phoenix put in effort to physically embody the "wolf-like and malnourished" Arthur, suffering the side effects from taking multiple medications for his mental illness. He lost 23 kilograms for the role, eating an apple a day, to play the gaunt-looking, unstable character.

피닉스는 탁월한 연기 외에도 정신질환약을 다량으로 복용하며 부작용을 겪는 주인공 아서가 '영양실조 상태의 늑대' 처럼 보이기 위해 노력을 기울였다. 그는 수척해보이고 불안정한 캐릭터인 조커 연기를 위해 하루에 사과 한 개를 먹으며 23kg을 감량했다.
