K-pop stars such as BTS will not be exempted from compulsory military service.
방탄소년단 등 K팝 스타들이 병역면제를 받지 못하게 된다.
Officials at the government's military system reform body said Sunday that they have agreed not to extend an existing exemption.
정부의 병역특례제도 개선 태스크포스(TF)의 관계자들은 일요일 기존의 병역 면제 혜택을 확대하지 않기로 합의했다고 밝혔다.
An official announcement is expected to be made at the end of this month.
이달 말, 이에 대한 공식 발표가 나올 예정이다.
Prize winners of certain contests, mostly Western classical and Korean traditional music events, as well as athletes who win any of Olympic medals or Asian Games gold medals can be exempted from the military service.
음악 경연 대회 (주로 서양 클래식 음악 또는 한국 전통 음악 경연대회) 수상자와 올림픽 메달이나 아시안 게임 금메달을 딴 선수는 병역의 의무가 면제된다.
The fairness of the system ― backed by a law introduced in 1973 ― was questioned last year after BTS' global success. Some lawmakers, including Ha Tae-keung of the minor opposition Bareunmirae Party, called for reform, saying that pop artists also deserved the privilege.
지난해 방탄소년단의 세계적인 성공 이후, 1973년 도입된 현 병역특례제도의 형평성 논란이 불거졌다. 하태경 바른미래당 의원을 포함한 일부 국회의원들은 K팝 가수들도 군면제 혜택의 자격이 있다며 병역법 개정을 요구했다.
Some noted athletes such as Lee Kang-in, who led Korea to a historic runner-up finish at the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup, could also be considered.
일부는 2019 FIFA U-20 월드컵에서 역사적인 준우승을 이끈 이강인 같은 운동선수들도 군면제 대상이 될 수 있다고 언급했다.
If the system remains the same or changes very little, which seems likely, Jin, 26, the oldest member of BTS, is expected to begin military duty soon. In an interview with "CBS Sunday Morning" in April, he said he would respond to the duty and do his best when the time comes.
현 병역법이 그대로 유지되거나 거의 바뀌지 않는다면 방탄소년단의 맏형 진(26)도 머지않아 군 복무를 시작해야 한다. 진은 지난 4월 미국 CBS '선데이 모닝'과의 인터뷰에서 "때가 되면 최선을 다해 군복무를 할 것"이라며 포부를 밝혔다.
