Compact sport utility vehicles are gaining ground in Korea's automobile market as their dimensions have grown close to those of medium-sized SUVs.
준중형 스포츠 유틸리티 자동차의 면적이 중형 SUV에 가깝게 몸집을 불리며 국내 자동차 시장에서 준중형 SUV가 강세를 보이고 있다.
Data released on Sunday showed that the country's five automakers ― Hyundai Motor, Kia, GM Korea, Renault Samsung and SsangYong Motor ― sold a total of 49,495 compact SUVs, including Hyundai's Tucson and Kia's Sportage, during the July-September period, becoming the top sales segment here.
일요일 공개된 자료에 따르면 국내 5개 자동차 제조업체(현대자동차, 기아, 한국 GM, 르노삼성자동차, 쌍용자동차)는 올해 7~9월까지 현대자동차 투싼과 기아 신형 스포티지를 포함해 준중형 SUV를 총 49,495대 판매해 각 차급 판매에서 1위를 차지했다.
The sales performance nearly doubled compared to the same period of 2020, when a total of 25,356 compact SUVs were sold.
준중형 SUV가 총 25,356대가 팔린 지난 해와 비교했을 때 판매량은 2배 가까이 증가했다.
Industry analysts said that the rising popularity of compact SUVs can be attributed to the introduction of new vehicles in the segment.
업계 분석가에 따르면 준중형 SUV의 인기 증가 이유는 준중형 부문에서의 신차 효과 때문이다.
Kia launched the new generation of the Sportage SUV in July and sold 14,036 of them during the third quarter. The sales figure jumped around 250 percent from the same period last year when only 4,007 Sportage SUVs were sold. Hyundai also sold 9,886 Tucson SUVs in the third quarter, up 78.3 percent quarter-on-quarter.
지난 7월 기아자동차는 신형 스포티지 SUV를 출시해 올해 3분기에 14,036대를 판매했다. 지난해 3분기 스포티지 판매량인 4,007대보다 약 250퍼센트 급증했다. 또 현대자동차는 올해 3분기에 투싼 SUV 9,886대를 판매했는데, 이는 지난해 3분기 판매량에 비해 78.3퍼센트 증가한 것이다.
Another reason why the compact SUVs have become popular seems to be that their dimensions have grown as large as those of mid-sized SUVs.
준중형 SUV가 인기를 끄는 또 다른 이유는 중형 SUV만큼 차체가 커졌기 때문인 것으로 보인다.
The wheelbase of the new Sportage is 2,755 millimeters long, increased by 85 millimeters over the previous model.
신형 스포티지의 축간거리는 2,755mm로 이전 모델보다 85mm 늘어났다.
Given the fact that the wheelbase refers to the distance between the front and rear wheels, the longer wheelbase indicates that consumers are more attracted to a larger indoor space.
축간거리가 곧 앞 바퀴와 뒷 바퀴 사이의 거리를 나타낸다는 사실을 고려하면 더욱 길어진 축간거리는 소비자들이 더욱 넓어진 실내 공간에 매력을 느낀다는 사실을 보여준다.
"Compact SUVs are becoming a preferred choice for consumers who prefer to have relatively large-sized SUVs at affordable prices," an official in the car industry said, adding that the on-going popularity of compact SUVs will continue for the time being.
업계 관계자들은 "준중형 SUV는 부담이 되지 않는 가격선에서 비교적 큰 SUV를 선호하는 소비자들의 선택을 받고 있다"면서 당분간 준중형 SUV의 인기가 지속될 전망이라고 전했다.
