As many are expected to stay home this Chuseok holiday due to COVID-19, the Seoul Metropolitan Government released a list of performances and activities that residents can enjoy via the city's culture channels on YouTube and Naver TV.
A 60-minute joint performance by Song Ga-in, a trot singer, and Yu Taepyungyang, a traditional Korean pansori singer is one thing the city government has prepared especially for this Chuseok.
Song became popular through "Miss Trot," a Korean reality show, early this year and is one of the most popular entertainers here. Yu, 29, is a singer whose voice has earned him millions of fans across Korea.
The show was recorded in advance at Seoul tourist destinations ― Donuimun Museum Village, Seoul Donhwamun Traditional Theater, Namsangol Hanok Village and sites around the old Seoul City Wall ― and will be uploaded at 7 p.m. on Oct. 2 to the channels and also be aired at 10 p.m. Oct. 3 on cable channel SBS MTV.
Virtual Reality and 3D technologies were used in recording so as to enhance quality of the show, according to the city government.
The government also prepared a show catering to the older generation, featuring Korea's first generation trot musicians ― Hyun Mi, Park Il-nam, Park Jae-ran, Nam Il-hae and Yoon Seung-hui ― which is now available.
The Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra is featuring four recorded shows online featuring the music of Mahler, Sibelius, Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven.
For those looking to learn something during this holiday period, the city has also prepared online classes instructing viewers how to make traditional bracelets; curtains with traditional patterns; and Dasik, a traditional tea confectionery. To make the bracelets and the curtains, interested parties can purchase a kit from the Naver Smart Store, Donuimun Museum Village or Namsangol Hanok Village online store in advance. All the videos, except for the screen making, are now available. The curtain making session will be available Wednesday.
For those who want to learn to play the drums and guitar online, the city offers free classes online. Drummer Kim Kyeong-in from the band Peter Pan Complex and freelance musician Lee Han-cheol will lead the tutoring sessions. The videos are available on the YouTube channel.
If you're looking for a live performance, Namsangol Hanok Village will offer a reenactment of the "Cheonshin Gut," a rite performed by a shaman, and "Sajanoreum," a traditional dance involving lion masks. The performance will be available on the village's official YouTube channel from Oct. 1.
