President Donald Trump has agreed to give China's ByteDance 45 days to negotiate a sale of popular short-video app TikTok to Microsoft Corp, two people familiar with the matter said on Sunday.
도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 인기 쇼트 비디오 앱 ‘틱톡'을 마이크로소프트에 매각할 수 있게 중국의 바이트댄스에 45일을 주기로 했다고 이 문제에 정통한 두 사람이 일요일 밝혔다.
U.S. officials have said TikTok under its Chinese parent poses a national risk because of the personal data it handles. Trump said on Friday he was planning to ban TikTok in the United States after dismissing the idea of a sale to Microsoft.
미 정부 관계자들은 틱톡이 다루는 개인정보 때문에 중국의 모기업 하에 있는 틱톡이 국가적 위험을 야기한다고 말했다. 트럼프 대통령은 금요일 마이크로소프트로의 매각 방안을 일축한 뒤 틱톡을 미국에서 금지할 계획이라고 밝힌 바 있다.
But following a discussion between Trump and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, the Washington-based company said in a statement on Sunday that it would continue negotiations to acquire TikTok from ByteDance, and that it aimed to reach a deal by Sept. 15.
그러나 트럼프 대통령과 사티아 나델라 마이크로소프트 최고경영자(CEO)의 대화 이후 워싱턴에 본사를 둔 마이크로소프트는 일요일 성명을 통해 "바이트댄스로부터 틱톡을 인수하기 위해 계속 협상을 할 것"이라며 "9월 15일까지 협상 타결을 목표로 한다"고 밝혔다.
It was not immediately clear what changed Trump's mind. Banning TikTok would alienate many of its young users ahead of the U.S. presidential election in November.
