Actress with 31-year career takes on challenge of musical film ‘Life is Beautiful'

Yum Jung-ah is one of the most accomplished actresses of her generation here who remains at the top of her game, but she still gets nervous before opening a movie.
염정아는 그녀 세대에서 가장 성공한 한국 여배우 중 한 명으로서 아직 전성기를 누리고 있지만, 영화 개봉 전에는 여전히 긴장을 한다.

Ahead of the release of her new film, "Life is Beautiful," Yum made a secret visit to a movie theater in Seoul where she sat with the audience and watched their reactions during the pre-release screening.
그녀의 새 작품 ‘인생은 아름다워' 개봉 전 염정아는 몰래 서울의 한 영화관을 찾아 개봉 전 시사회에서 관객과 함께 영화를 보며 그들의 반응을 살폈다.

"I saw the film in theaters four times because I wanted to witness the audience's reaction. Although I know all the details about the plot, I cry every time I watch it. Last night, the audience members were laughing and crying. One lady in the crowd was wiping back her tears with bare hands so I wanted to hand her a tissue," she said during an interview with The Korea Times at a cafe in Seoul, Wednesday.
염정아는 수요일 서울 한 카페에서 코리아타임스와 만나 "관객 반응을 직접 보고 싶어 영화관에서 영화를 네 번이나 봤다. 줄거리 세부사항을 속속들이 알고 있지만 볼 때마다 운다. 어제 밤에는 관객들이 웃고 울더라. 관객석의 한 아가씨가 맨손으로 눈물을 훔치길래 티슈를 건네주고 싶었다"고 말했다.

Over the course of her three-decade career since entering the entertainment industry in 1991 as a Miss Korea pageant runner-up, Yum has solidified herself as a versatile actor capable of thriving in any genre setting.
미스코리아 선으로서 1991년 연예계에 발을 들인 후 30년에 걸친 경력을 쌓으며 염정아는 어떤 장르 설정에서도 빛날 수 있는 다재다능한 배우로 자리매김했다.

Yum's peerless filmography is populated by numerous accolades — highlighted by a Best Supporting Actress award at the Blue Dragon Film Awards for the 2004 film, "The Big Swindle," Best Actress award at the Baeksang Arts Awards for the 2007 film, "The Old Garden" and the 2014 film, "Cart," respectively. Nonetheless, at age 50, Yum continually proves to be a multifaceted actor on screen.
타의 추종을 불허하는 염정아의 필모그래피는 2004년 청룡영화상 여우조연상(‘범죄의 재구성'), 2007년 및 2014년 백상예술대상 영화부문 여자 최우수연기상(각각 ‘오래된 정원'과 ‘카트')를 필두로 하는 수상 실적으로 가득하다. 그럼에도 불구하고 50세가 된 염정아는 여전히 스크린에서 다면적인 배우임을 끊임없이 증명하고 있다.

That's demonstrated by her bold decision to star in the jukebox musical film, which is a comedy-drama about a middle-aged couple, Se-yeon and Jin-bong, who embark on a journey to find Se-yeon's first love after she is diagnosed with terminal lung cancer.
그녀의 연기 열정은 중년 부부 – 폐암 말기 판정을 받고 첫사랑을 찾기 위한 여정에 오르는 ‘세연'과 ‘진봉' – 에 대한 코미디 드라마이자 쥬크박스 뮤지컬 영화의 주연을 맡기로 한 대담한 결정에서도 엿보인다.

A huge fan of "La Land" (2016) and "Mamma Mia!" (2008), Yum said she was eager to do a musical film. However, she found it more difficult than she had imagined because her dancing skills fall short of anything great. She started vocal and dance training a year before she actually started filming.
‘라라랜드(2016)'과 ‘맘마미아!(2008)'의 열렬한 팬이기도 한 염정아는 뮤지컬 영화를 줄곧 하고 싶었다고 전했다. 그러나 그녀의 춤실력은 훌륭함과는 다소 거리가 있어서 이를 현실에서 이루기는 상상보다 쉽지 않았다. 사실 염정아는 영화 촬영 일 년 전부터 보컬과 댄스 트레이닝을 받기 시작했다.

"I had to start from the basics — learning abdominal breathing, the beat and rhythm of music. It actually felt like going back to school. I even dreamed about my vocal coach counting ‘one, two, three…' because I was really anxious," she said.
염정아는 "나는 복식 호흡과 음악의 리듬과 같은 기초부터 시작해야 했다. 학교로 돌아간 듯한 기분이었다. 너무 긴장돼서 꿈에 보컬 트레이너가 나와 "하나, 둘, 셋…"이라며 카운트도 했다"고 털어놨다.
