The 20th anniversary edition of the festival boasts a lineup of over 60 titles, which will be screened at the Film at Lincoln Center (FLC) and Asia Society in New York from July 15 to 31 (local time).
Among them, Kim Han-min's "Hansan: Rising Dragon," revolving around the historic 1592 Battle of Hansan Island led by legendary Admiral Yi Sun-sin (1545-98), has been selected as this year's centerpiece film, while Choi Dong-hoon's sci-fi action fantasy "Alienoid" will close the festival.
"Perhaps Love," a witty comedy directed by actor-turned-filmmaker Cho Eun-ji that tells the story of an unlikely duo of a novelist stuck in a writer's slump and his gay student, has been shortlisted to compete for the Uncaged Award for Best Feature Film.
Korean actors are gaining recognition at this year's film event as well.
NYAFF's inaugural Best from the East Award will go to versatile actor Ryu Seung-ryong for his leading performance in "Perhaps Love," while Jang Hyuk will receive the Daniel A. Craft Award for Excellence in Action Cinema for his stunt work in "The Killer" and "The Swordsman."
Last but not least, "The Girl on a Bulldozer" star Kim Hye-yoon has been named as one of the honorees for the festival's Screen International Rising Star Asia Award.
On July 17, the festival's Fight Cancer Night screening event will invite Kwon Soo-kyung's heartwarming comedy "Stellar: A Magical Ride," with all proceeds being donated to the American Cancer Society.
