Global hacking group Anonymous claims NASA will soon announce proof of alien life.
The group posted the claims in a video on a YouTube channel on June 20.
In the video, a person in a Guy Fawkes mask -- a symbol for Anonymous -- quoted a statement by Thomas Zurbuchen, NASA's associate administrator, during a congressional hearing on "Advances in the Search for Life" on April 26.
"Taking into account all of the different activities and missions that are specifically searching for evidence of alien life, we are on the verge of making one of the most profound and unprecedented discoveries in history," the Anonymous member said, quoting Zurbuchen.
The video also quoted other comments Zurbuchen made, such as the existence of oceans on Europa, one of Jupiter's moons, and hydrogen on Saturn's moon Enceladus, discovered by the Cassini spacecraft.
Zurbuchen rejected Anonymous' claims, saying the interpretation was misleading.
"Contrary to some reports, there's no pending announcement from NASA regarding extraterrestrial life," Zurbuchen posted on Twitter.
But he added: "Are we alone in the universe? While we do not know yet, we have missions moving forward that may help answer that fundamental question."
