Genesis attained global sales of 1 million as of August, less than eight years after Hyundai Motor Group launched the luxury brand back in 2015, the company said, Sunday.
According to the premium vehicle manufacturer, more than 690,000 Genesis vehicles have been sold since its launch in November 2015. The car manufacturer has additionally sold 318,000 of its vehicles abroad during the same period.
The pace of sales has continued to rise sharply. Genesis said its accumulated sales here and abroad topped 500,000 in May 2021.
The Genesis G80 was the most sought-after vehicle with more than 390,000 G80 vehicles sold since arriving on the market in 2016. The G80 is a mid-sized sports sedan representing the core identity of Genesis.
Genesis' first-ever SUVs ― the GV70 and GV80 ― also contributed significantly to driving up overall sales globally. Their combined sales have reached more than 330,000 worldwide.
The luxury vehicle maker also shared its vision of achieving complete electrification by releasing all new Genesis vehicles as electric models from 2025.
"Genesis has continued making concerted efforts to create new experiences and value for customers since its brand was launched," Genesis Executive Vice President Song Min-kyu said. "We will keep making a fresh journey to create special and luxurious experiences for our customers."
The designs of Genesis vehicles feature what the company calls athletic elegance. After launching its flagship G90 sedan, the company has since diversified the lineup, encompassing internal combustion engines as well as electric vehicles (EVs). Until recently, the brand only sold four models, but the lineup has since been expanded to 10.
Genesis is selling its luxury vehicles in 17 major overseas markets, such as the United States, Europe, China and Australia, the company said.
According to data from J.D. Power, a U.S. market researcher, Genesis topped the list in its initial quality study, released in 2022. The brand was at the top of the list for consecutive years since 2017 and came in second in 2021. Last year it regained the top position.
Genesis is also going all-out to meet global demand for EVs by diversifying its production bases abroad. The Genesis Electrified GV70 compact SUV is being manufactured in Hyundai Motor's factory in Alabama in the U.S.
The brand plans to tap deeper into the North American EV market with the Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA) EV manufacturing facility in Georgia. Hyundai is scheduled to finish its construction by 2025.
