Moon's diplomacy with US
As a person who does research on China, I am often someone who points out a litany of problems in the South Korea-China relationship, including the recent discord over THAAD. But as I've been shuttling between Seoul and Beijing, as well as Seoul and Washington, I've come to a resounding Eureka realization that the Seoul-Washington relationship faces more serious challenges than the Seoul-Beijing ties. It may seem odd, given that Washington is Seoul's main ally. This warrants attention from the Moon administration.

Will Kim visit China again?
China's foreign ministry spokesman skirted away a question whether North Korean leader Kim Jong-un would visit Beijing soon. Oct. 6 marks the 70th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations between China and North Korea. It has been widely expected that a very senior-level visit would transpire, probably at the top level, to commemorate the special anniversary.

Beijing-Seoul ties after Xi's Pyongyang visit
There are some qualitative differences in the way China treats South Korea since Chinese leader Xi Jinping's visit to Pyongyang. The visit to Pyongyang, which took place in late June, itself was a significant event in Sino-North Korea ties; China signified it was raising its stake in the geopolitical dividends of the North Korea nuclear matter. Interestingly, without any public announcement, China's dealings with South Korea have since also shown a nuanced shift.

Wang Yi's visit to Pyongyang
South Korean media outlets loudly speculated whether Chinese State Councilor Wang Yi's visit to North Korea this week would reinvigorate the stalled nuclear talks between Washington and Pyongyang. This is quite a common yet misplaced media angle in South Korea.

US-China relations in 1980s
Michael Pillsbury, a former Pentagon adviser, mentioned the substantial military and intelligence cooperation between the U.S. and China during the Cold War era. That unusual experience, looking back, partially led the U.S. intelligence community to misjudge and downplay China's ambition to displace the U.S. as the world's superpower, he argued.

US in Korea-Japan discord
Acrimonious emotions toward each other remain high in both South Korea and Japan, leaving much uncertainty for the future trajectory of the bilateral relationship. Pessimism, runs deep because the current deadlock is also part of deeply embedded issues of history and territory, to which there is no easy solution.

US regret on China
For the U.S., from a strategic point of view, the most important event that occurred since World War II was the rise of China as a nuclear power. Nevertheless, the U.S. feels it failed to make the appropriate policy investments at that time to deal with this emerging challenge. During the Cold War, the United States was in a rivalry against the Soviet Union, which ended with the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. At that time, China was just a large rural country.

Specter of THAAD
A specter is haunting the Korean Peninsula - the specter of THAAD. It was the Chinese leader Xi Jinping who has brought it back from the grave. Xi, quite unexpectedly, raised the matter with President Moon Jae-in on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Osaka, Japan.

China's strategic shift
A very interesting new development in the China-North Korea intrigue happened last week: Xi Jinping began to use North Korea as a negotiating card against the United States in the trade war.

Pancreatic cancer and trade war
I gave a talk on the U.S.-China trade war to lawmakers at the National Assembly last week. My host introduced the topic as “timely.” I corrected him. “It's not a timely topic. It's a lot late for us to realize it now and discuss it here. It's like pancreatic cancer. Once you realize something is wrong and go to hospital, the doctor will tell you that you have six months left to live. We have to take the matter seriously, very seriously.”
