Show your love, Mr. Trump
About a month from now, U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un will hold another summit meeting, probably in Vietnam.

Intractable neighbor
Since President Moon Jae-in took office 20 months ago, the relationship between Korea and Japan has been going steadily downhill. In a way, there is nothing strange about it, given the progressive leader's slogan is to “clean up old evils.” Of course, the elimination of accumulated evils mainly concerns domestic politics. If one applies the same catchphrase to foreign policy, however, no other bilateral relationship is more problematic than the one between Seoul and Tokyo.

Price of alliance
On Nov. 7, 2017, President Moon Jae-in greeted visiting U.S. President Donald Trump at Camp Humphreys in Pyeongtaek, a U.S. military base some 75 km south of Seoul. Few had known about Moon's welcoming plan for Trump until the last minute. Why did the South Korean leader brave the controversy about excessive modesty by choosing the unusual, abrupt protocol?

Premature crisis-mongering
In the world of sports, there is a phenomenon called the “sophomore slump.” It occurs when an athlete, who received rookie of the year award in their debuting year, gives a disappointing performance in the second year.

Kim Jong-un must visit Seoul as promised
Not a weekend goes by without Gwanghwamun Square in the heart of Seoul being occupied by demonstrators of one sort or another. Last Sunday was no exception, but a little unusual. In one corner, members of the Committee to Extol Baekdu were praising North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, calling for his visit to the South by the end of the year.

How should Korea deal with Japan?
Over the past seven decades since Korea was liberated from Japan's colonial rule, their bilateral relationship has gone through numerous ups and downs. The diplomatic friction was mainly due to Korea's persistent demand that its former colonial rulers apologize for past wrongdoings and compensate victims, and Japan's obstinate refusal.

Detente and denuclearization
What would be a fair evaluation of President Moon Jae-in's tour of five European countries last week “as the salesman for North Korea?”

Diplomacy and economy
President Moon Jae-in's approval rating has reclaimed the 60-percent mark thanks to the progress in talks to denuclearize North Korea. When the major economic statistics come out later the month, Moon's support rate may fall below 50 percent again.

Another denuclearization
Summer seems to be ending, finally. It was the hottest summer in nearly a century and even lovers of the hot season are likely to feel relieved that it's almost over. No less heated than this baked peninsula throughout this summer was the debate over the nation's energy policy, especially the phase-out of nuclear power generation.

Dealing with Japan
As the cliche here goes, Korea and Japan are so near - geographically - yet so far away - emotionally. A recent public survey shows only 9.2 percent of South Koreans - less than one in every 10 people - think Japan is trustworthy. Opinion polls in Japan also put South Korea very high on the list of least likable countries, perhaps right below North Korea.
