COVID-19's sad anniversary
An important anniversary has slipped by. It was in January 2020, while visiting Hong Kong for a few days, that I started seeing stories about a strange new virus diagnosed in the industrial Chinese city of Wuhan. The first headlines didn't seem like a big deal. Some "experts" were saying the virus had been found in Wuhan and nowhere else.

More deaths than births
Fifteen years ago in 2006, David Coleman, a population expert and demographer at the Oxford Centre for Population Research, warned that South Korea could become the first country on the planet to lose its entire population because of its low birthrate.

Lunch to remember at Bierhof
Lunch to remember at Bierhof
For the past 13 years, Park Dal-bong has owned an unpretentious buffet restaurant known as the Bierhof near Gangnam Station. But it, like so many other businesses in Korea's hospitality sector, has closed.

Growing US-China rivalry risks stability in Middle East
Growing US-China rivalry risks stability in Middle East
China's conflict management diplomacy may not go down well with the Gulf Arabs, notably Saudi Arabia, judging by what for Saudi media was a blunt and rare recent critique of the People's Republic. In a game of shadow-boxing in which intellectuals and journalists front for officials who prefer the luxury of plausible deniability, Saudi Arabia responded bluntly in a column auth...

Biden amnesty expands US labor market
Biden amnesty expands US labor market
If there's one thing that President Joe Biden has made abundantly clear, it's that he will grant an amnesty to an unknown number of illegal immigrants. Not a single individual knows what the exact illegal immigrant population is, and that's the first problem that the new Biden administration faces. Nevertheless, Biden has made immigration his chief legislative priority.

Restoring US credibility, soft power
Restoring US credibility, soft power
You will be acutely aware that, after the ravages of the Trump years, you have a big healing job ahead of you not only at home but abroad. Too often in recent times America's allies, partners and friends around the world have found ourselves regarded as encumbrances rather than assets.

When unrealistic becomes real
Huh Kyung-young, head of the National Revolutionary Party / Korea Times fileBy Kim RahnA familiar face has returned to the local political scene as the April 7 by-elections edge closer. He's none other than Huh Kyung-young, a quirky politician who rose to fame claiming to have levitational powers and an IQ of 430. He has become a laughing stock, but Huh barely flinches at suc...

Biden and Korean relations
I'm happy Joseph Biden has begun as the new President of the United States. I think Koreans are too, at least those South of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). Among the many challenges of foreign policy facing the United States, relations with North Korea will remain a flash point over the next four years.

Life without Trump's tweets
Life without Trump's tweets
He's the most dangerous president in modern memory and he wielded his Twitter account like a weapon of mass destruction. Thank God they finally took it away from him - after his irresponsible behavior incited a deadly riot at the U.S. Capitol.
