    Education for brighter tomorrow
Gearing up for the new school year, the Philippines Department of Education (DepEd) has rolled out the K-12 Basic Education Curriculum to grades 2-8 teachers as it implements the second year of the enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013. Despite the issues and challenges, DepEd highly commits itself to pursue an agenda of reform in the Philippines educational system.

    Clarification from Pakistani Embassy
This clarification is in reference to the news published in The Korea Times on 4 July, 2013, regarding the meeting of Indian National Security Advisor, Mr. Shiv-shankar Menon, with South Korean President, H.E. Ms. Park Geun-hye, at the President House on 2 July, 2013, stating that South Korea and India have decided to establish an intelligence sharing relationship on proliferation activities by North Korea and Pakistan.

    Medical tourism in Korea
Medical tourism has been in the news quite a lot these days. A number of visitors from Japan, China, Russia and other countries visit Korea not only for sightseeing but medical purposes such as health check-ups, plastic surgery, dental care and stomach treatment. These are the areas in which Korea leads technologically and offers treatment at relatively low prices. The number of medical tourists to Korea is on the increase. For example, the number of patients visiting Korea’s major hospitals jumped to 60,201 in 2009 from 7,900 in 2007 and it is expected to reach as many as 200,000 this year.

    Holistic sustainable development
I read Bjorn Lomborg’s “Limits of Panic” article in the June 29 issue of The Korea Times with great interest. It was a coincidence that I was on my way back from the International Society for Industrial Ecology conference (2013) held in Ulsan, South Korea, and picked up the newspaper before entering the plane bound for Gimpo Airport in Seoul.

    In defense of LTI Korea
On June 14, The Korea Times carried as its front-page lead news story an article headed “State translation agency needs fixing,” a title which in itself constitutes a direct attack on the work of LTI Korea, the agency in question.

    Solution for climate change
Europe is seeing the worst flooding of its history and several rivers have burst their banks and are now flooding big cities. Several European countries including Germany, Hungary and Austria are badly affected and people are trying hard in the face of the worst flooding in history.

    Some comments on Hague Convention
I would like to bring forward some comments to the joint opinion expressed in a guest column, a few days ago, about the Hague Convention signed by Korea.

    DMZ peace park and ecosystem
It has been 60 years since the two Koreas signed an armistice that ended the Korean War. During her recent visit to the U.S., President Park Geun-hye proposed a plan to create an international peace park along the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). Her speech fluttered with new hope, reflecting our nation's will to settle peace and opening the possibility of reunification of the two Koreas. While such efforts to promote peace are laudable, I cannot but express my anxiety about the environmental impact that this development project could potentially bring.

    Prevention of terrorism
The prevention of terrorism is necessary and it requires a certain violence. Not that external wrath we often commit against our neighbor in the name of peace, but rather the internal violence against self, against our selfishness, greed, lust and pride.

    Misunderstanding on India's nukes
I am writing with reference to an editorial in The Korea Times, titled “Korea-US Nuclear Deal” wherein a reference has been made to the U.S. having allowed India to reprocess plutonium despite “New Delhi’s defiance of the non-proliferation treaty.”
