Korea snatched a come-from-behind victory against Japan Wednesday in the Asian Volleyball Championship quarterfinals in Tehran, Iran.
The national team, led by Park Ki-won, beat the Japanese 3-2 (25-21, 28-30, 23-25, 25-17, 16-14), continuing their prowess in head-to-head matches with a 22-8 record.
With this victory, Korea secured one of the eight places at an Olympic qualifying event in Japan next June along with the other semifinalists and the host nation. Korea can qualify for one of the 12 Olympic berths if they win or finish highest among the participating Asian countries.
The winner and runner-up at the Asian Championship will also qualify for the FIVB World Cup.
Only 12 countries compete at the volleyball World Cup and the top three will also book their places at the London 2012 Olympics.
