Big Ben to be renamed “Liz Tower”

The iconic Clock Tower of Britain's Parliament ― widely, though incorrectly, known as Big Ben ― is being renamed in honor of Queen Elizabeth II, authorities said Tuesday.

The 315-foot (96-meter)-high structure, one of Britain's most recognizable landmarks, will now formally be known as Elizabeth Tower following a campaign by lawmakers to mark the monarch's 60 years on the throne.

A House of Commons Commission statement said arrangements were being made for the ``decision to be implemented in an appropriate manner in due course.''

The tower was completed in 1858. It houses a four-faced chiming clock and the famed 13.5 ton Big Ben bell. Over the years, people began calling the whole tower Big Ben.

Prime Minister David Cameron, who backed the campaign for a change, said the new name was a ``fitting tribute to the queen and the service she has given our country.''

Opposition chief Ed Miliband, head of Britain's Labour Party, said the honor ``rightly recognized Queen Elizabeth's lifetime of dedication and tireless service.'' (AP)

영국 런던의 관광명소인 웨스트민스터 의사당의 대형 시계탑 `빅 벤'이 엘리자베스 2세 여왕의 즉위 60주년인 '다이아몬드 주빌리' 기념 차원에서 `엘리자베스 타워'로 개명된다.

데이비드 캐머런 영국 총리를 비롯해 331명의 의원들이 현재 빅벤의 이름을 엘리자베스 여왕 즉위 60주년을 기념해 이같이 개칭하는 캠페인에 서명을 했다고 영국 일간 데일리 메일이 1일(현지시간) 보도했다.

이런 움직임은 지난 1897년 영국의 첫 군주인 빅토리아 여왕의 즉위 60주년을 기념해 의사당 건너편에 위치한 광장의 타워를 `빅토리아 타워'로 개명한 전례를 따른 것이다.

캐머런 총리는 "많은 하원 의원들이 당적과 관계없이 빅벤 명칭을 여왕의 이름을 따서 개명하는데 찬성하고 있는 것은 반가운 뉴스"라면서 "좋은 성과가 있기를 기대한다"고 말했다.

영국 하원 운영위원회는 오는 6월말 회의를 열어 의사당 대형 시계탑을 통상 `빅벤'으로 부르지만 공식 명칭은 `엘리자베스 타워'로 하는 안건을 처리할 방침이다.

템스 강가 의사당 건물의 일부인 빅벤은 1843년 화재 이후 1859년 재건축돼 지난 2009년 150주년을 맞았다. 높이 315피트(96ｍ)의 빅벤은 지난해 말 북서 방향으로 0.26도 기울어진 것으로 나타나 눈길을 끌기도 했다.

빅벤은 건립이후 152년 동안 국제 표준시를 가르켜 왔으며, 빅벤의 종소리는 영국의 TV나 라디오 뉴스 시보로 사용되고 있다. (런던-AFP)
