Scientists to develop deep-sea ’stealth’ submarine

Submarines have been called “snipers” under the sea. They are also called “deep-sea guerrillas.”

However, submarines became vulnerable due to the development of up-to-date patrol aircraft, helicopters and other defense systems used against them.

It is possible to detect submarines with the use of sonar and radar. Sonar uses reflected sound waves. Radar spots microwaves created by submarines on the surface and underwater.

To incapacitate sonar and radar, scientists have begun working on a new technology.

They believe that the use of “meta materials” will make it possible for submarines to avoid detection by sonar or radar.

According to them, meta materials can refract sound waves that reach submarines.

잠수함은 바다 속의 스나이퍼, 심해의 게릴라다.

하지만 대잠초계기, 대잠헬리콥터 등 대잠 방어 체계의 발전으로 갈수록 은밀한 접근이 어려워지고 있다.

이미 소나와 레이더로 스텔스 잠수함의 탐지도 가능하다. 소나는 음파의 반사파로, 레이더는 잠수함이 수중과 수면에 일으키는 미세한 물결을 통해 잠수함을 찾는다.

현재 과학자들은 이를 무력화시킬 음향·유체 은폐기술을 연구 중이다.

먼저 음향 은폐는 투명화 기술의 핵심소재로 꼽히는 메타소재(metamaterial)를 이용, 잠수함에 닿은 음파를 굴절시켜 소나의 탐지를 막는다.

유체 은폐술의 경우 잠수함 주변의 물 흐름을 바꿔 잠수함이 일으키는 난류와 반류(伴流)를 감춤으로써 레이더 피탐 가능성을 없애는 방식이다. 이 두 기술은 이론적으로 기존 잠수함에도 추가 적용할 수 있다.

미 해군연구소(ONR)는 최신 잠수함 은폐술에 대한 코멘트를 거절했지만 현실화 가능성은 결코 낮지 않다. 미 해군이 이미 2009년 메타소재 역탐지 및 탐지방해 프로그램을 공식 개시했기 때문이다.
