Son Yeon-jae ranks 5th in global rhythmic gymnasts

Gymnast Son Yeon-jae ranked fifth in the rhythmic discipline in the latest global tally announced by the International Gymnastics Federation on Saturday.

The 2012 ranking by the international governing body of competitive gymnastics, whose headquarters is in Lausanne, Switzerland, had the 18-year-old Son behind Russia's Daria Kondakova, Daria Dmitrieva and Evgeniya Kanaeva, and Israel's Neta Rivkin.

Son's ranking in rhythmic gymnastics represents a sharp rise from 2011 when she came in 19th place.

The federation sets its annual rankings based on how often an athlete participates in world cup competitions and their results.

Son received 57 points after having taken part in four world cup events, placing her just below Rivkin who earned 58 points.

The rhythmic gymnast is expected to take part in the Minsk world cup in mid-July before taking part in the London 2012 Summer Olympics. (Yonhap)

한국 리듬체조의 간판인 손연재(18·세종고)가 세계랭킹 5위에 올랐다.

26일 국제체조연맹(FIG)의 2012 세계랭킹 자료에 따르면 손연재는 다리아 콘다코바·다리아 드미트리에바·에브게니아 카바에바(이상 러시아), 네타 리브킨(이스라엘)에 이어 5위를 차지했다.

이는 지난해 랭킹(19위)과 비교해 14계단 뛰어오른 것이다.

FIG는 월드컵 출전 횟수와 성적을 바탕으로 랭킹 포인트를 산정해 선수별 세계랭킹을 매긴다.

손연재의 현재 랭킹포인트는 57점으로, 4위인 리브킨과 1점 차다.

손연재는 올 시즌 월드컵 시리즈 6개 대회 중 4월 이탈리아 페사로를 시작으로 러시아 펜자, 5월 불가리아 소피아·우즈베키스탄 타슈켄트 월드컵 등 4개 대회에 참가했다.

펜자 월드컵에서 사상 처음으로 전 종목 결선에 올라 후프 동메달을 따냈다.

소피아 월드컵에서는 리본 동메달을 목에 걸었다.

타슈켄트 월드컵에선 전 종목 결선에 올랐지만 아쉽게도 리본 결선에서 리본이 끊어져 실격당하는 소중한 경험을 하기도 했다.

지난 22일 귀국해 훈련을 시작한 손연재는 7월 12~15일 열리는 벨라루시 민스크 월드컵에 참가한 뒤 올림픽이 열리는 런던에 입성할 예정이다. (연합뉴스)
