K-pop singer and actor Lee Seung-gi, 29, who was drafted into the Army for his mandatory military service on Feb. 1, will be assigned to the Special Warfare Command next week, an Army official said Thursday.

"Lee has been assigned to the intelligence specialty group and will join the Special Warfare Command on March 21," the official said.

Since his conscription, Lee has undergone basic training at the Army training center in Nonsan, South Chungcheong Province, which he completed Wednesday.

The official said that Lee's duty with the Special Warfare Command will be handling administrative affairs, and not combat operations.

"Once Lee moves to the Special Warfare Command, he is expected to be posted to headquarters," the official said.

Lee will be discharged on Oct. 31 of next year.

Lee debuted as a singer in 2004 with the hit track "Because You're My Girl."

He has taken center stage as an actor in various TV dramas such as "Brilliant Legacy" and "The King 2 Hearts."

He has also shown his talent on variety shows, most notably "Two Days, One Night."

Lee released a single "I'm Joining the Military," Jan. 21 to inform his fans that he was reporting for his mandatory duty.

On the day of his conscription, hundreds of fans from Korea, China and Japan gathered at the entrance of the training center to see the star join the Army.

In South Korea, all able-bodied men are required to serve about two years of mandatory military service.
