Educators will gather for int'l conference in Incheon in March

More than 700 educators from over 16 countries around the world will gather in Incheon, March 11, to discuss educational trends and key issues.

The Korea Council of Overseas Schools (KORCOS), a nonprofit organization of educators from overseas schools working in Korea, has been organizing the annual KORCOS Conference since 1987.

This year's conference is hosted by KORCOS member institution Chadwick International, a K-12 international school in Songdo, Incheon.

"We all know what we do and how we do it, but the 'why' of our work with students is the driving force for our motivation. Knowing and sharing our why is inspiring ― it leads toward action and focuses our efforts," said Shelly Luke Wille, head of school at Chadwick International.

"KORCOS 2016 invites you to clarify and share your 'why' with other like-minded educators."

She said she expects between 700 and 1,000 people to participate in the event.
Following the conference, two-day workshops are scheduled for the weekend with notable keynote speakers.

Wille said this is the first time workshops will be offered on the sidelines of the KORCOS conference.

"The weekend workshops are designed as an opportunity for educators who are coming and taking the time to focus and develop to go deeper into a particular topic," she said. "The workshops really offer great opportunities for professional dialogue and experiences that normally you have to travel a great distance to get."

Among the workshop leaders, Bambi Betts, director of the Principals' Training Center for International School Leadership (PTC) and the Teacher Training Center for International Educators (TTC) in the United States, will lead workshops titled "Powerhouse Classroom Assessment" and "Leadership Tools for Teacher Leaders."

Education consultant of U.S.-based nRich Educational Consulting Richard Cash's topic will be "Differentiated Instruction for the 21st Century." And Deidre Fischer, an educational consultant at the Australian company DF Education, will host a workshop on "Women in Leadership."

"The one about women leadership is really relevant to female business leaders," said Wille. "One of the reasons that I am particularly interested in having this workshop here is that I work a lot with moms who are working professionals and I think there is an opportunity for us to have a network here in Korea that connects us and supports us in the work that we do."

Unlike previous years, this year's conference will be open to the public. It will be all in English.

"With the aim of providing more opportunities for those who are interested in education, especially internationals, we invite them to attend our event," a Chadwick staffer said.

"We have a history of deep connection and relationship with our Korean colleagues so we welcome them to come join us at the conference," Wille added.
