College lecturer says violent sex is in men’s nature

A course on gender bias at Hanyang University which was closed down due to controversy came back to life in less than a year with a different name, creating another set of controversy and forcing the administration to change the lecturer.

According to women communities, the Ansan campus of Hanyang University introduced a “Human Sexuality” lectured by a Kim.

Kim had been lecturing on “understanding sex” for over 10 years and told students to submit reports on sexual activities. He also said in his lectures that aggressive sex is part of men’s nature, inviting harsh criticism from students.

A spokesperson from a women’s group said, “The contents of the lectures are centered on male-superiority and not appropriate for college education.” They insisted that the lectures be stopped immediately.

On the part of the university, there have been strings of complaints on social network services like Twitter.

The president of the student body is currently conducting investigations on the contents of the lectures to determine their impropriety.

한양대가 성차별적인 내용이 문제가 돼 폐강했던 강의를 이름만 바꾼 채 1년 만에 재개설했다가 논란이 일자 강사를 긴급 교체키로 했다.

13일 여성계와 한양대에 따르면 한양대 에리카(안산) 캠퍼스는 가을 학기 신규 과목으로 김모 강사의 '인간 섹슈얼리티'를 개설했다.

10여 년간 '성의 이해'를 강의해 온 김 강사는 작년 수업에서 과제로 음란 동영상을 제출하도록 요구하거나 성폭력은 남성에 내재한 고유한 본능이라고 설명하는 등 일부 부적절한 강의 내용으로 학생들의 반발을 샀다.

여성단체까지 나서 "남성중심적 성 관념을 재생산하고 있다"며 강의 중단을 촉구하는 등 논란이 확산하자 학교는 강의 내용의 일부가 부적절함을 인정하고 폐강했다.

하지만 학교 측이 불과 1년 만에 같은 강사의 수업을 이름만 바꾼 채 재개설하자 트위터 등을 중심으로 또다시 논란이 불거졌다.

에리카캠퍼스 총여학생회도 집행부원이 직접 강의를 들으며 강사의 발언과 수업 내용을 점검했다.

한양대는 논란이 확산되자 12일 긴급회의를 열고 해당 과목의 강사를 분자생명과학부 채모 교수로 바꾸기로 했다.

임동진 에리카캠퍼스 교무처장은 "원래 강의를 맡기로 했던 채 교수가 일정상의 이유로 김 강사를 추천해 강의를 맡겼던 것"이라고 해명하고, "학생에게 성지식을 가르치는 것은 대학교육의 일부이므로 과목 자체는 필요하다"고 덧붙였다.

이에 대해 이구경숙 여성연합 사무처장은 "남녀 모두가 평등한 성의 주체임을 알려주는 성교육이 이뤄져야 한다"고 말했다.
