Ex-Saenuri lawmaker summoned over nomination scandal
A former lawmaker of the ruling Saenuri Party appeared before prosecutors on Tuesday morning for questioning over his alleged implication in a money-for-nomination scandal prior to April's parliamentary election.
Hyun Ki-hwan, then a member of the Saenuri Party's committee responsible for nominating proportional candidates, is suspected of receiving around 300 million won ($264,700) in bribes from Rep. Hyun Young-hee in return for securing her a spot on the proportional representation ticket. An aide to Rep. Hyun claimed the money was sent via Cho Ki-moon, a former Saenuri official of the party's Busan chapter, who acted as a go-between in the transaction. The 53-year-old Hyun Ki-hwan, who was expelled from the party last week, entered the Busan District Prosecutors' Office in the port city of Busan around 10 a.m. "I have not received any kind of money," he told reporters, flatly denying the allegations against him. "My colleagues and friends did not get proportional representation tickets," Hyun added, stating that money played no role in any nominations. The Busan prosecutors said Monday they plan to request an arrest warrant for Rep. Hyun, who was also expelled from the party last week. Both Hyuns, who are not related despite a shared last name, have consistently denied the allegations. (Yonhap) |
