Park nabs 2 more titles in US grand prix

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AFP) - Korea's Park Tae-hwan won the 100m and 400m freestyles Friday at the Santa Clara Grand Prix swimming meeting, taking his gold tally to three in two days.

Park, who opened the meeting on Thursday with a victory in the 800m freestyle, surged to the lead in the final 25 meters to win the 100m free in 48.85sec.

Former Olympic 50m free gold medallist Anthony Ervin, attempting a comeback after 12 years, touched second at 49.95 with Aaron Wayne third at 50.04.

Park won the 400m free in 3:44.96 with Ryan Napoleon of Australia second in 3:49.79. Canada's Ryan Cochrane was third in 3:50.56.

Dana Vollmer was a two-time winner, capturing the 100m freestyle and 100m butterfly ― both ahead of fellow American Natalie Coughlin.

Vollmer won the 100 free in 54.38 seconds, with Coughlin second in 54.77 and Australian Brittany Elmslie third in 54.89.

Vollmer returned to win the 100m fly in a meet record of 57.03sec, with Coughlin second in 58.44.

Japan's Kosuke Kitajima, the two-time defending Olympic champion who will be going for a three-peat in London, won the men's 200 breaststroke in 2:13.24.

Kitajima already owns the top time of 2012 at 2:08.00 from Japan's Olympic Trials in April.

Scott Weltz took second in 2:14.27, while Mexico's Christian Schurr Voigt was third (2:14.35).

Takuro Fujii led a Japanese one-two in the men's 100m fly in 52.79. Takeshi Matsuda was second in 52.84.

Bronte Barratt of Australia dominated the women's 400m free with a time of 4:06.13, just off her fastest time this year of 4:05.74.

Chelsea Chenault was second in 4:08.95, while Australia's Kylie Palmer was third in 4:09.79.

자유형 800ｍ 이어 100ｍ·400ｍ 잇따라 우승

한국 수영의 간판인 박태환(23·SK텔레콤)이 샌타클래라 국제그랑프리대회 남자 자유형 100ｍ와 400ｍ에서도 우승해 대회 3관왕에 올랐다.

이에 따라 2개월이 채 남지 않은 런던 올림픽에서의 금메달 획득 전망이 한층 밝아졌다는 평가가 나오고 있다.

박태환은 1일 오후(이하 현지시간) 미국 캘리포니아주 샌타클래라 조지 F. 헤인즈 국제수영센터에서 열린 대회 둘째 날 주종목인 남자 자유형 400ｍ 경기에서 3분44초96으로 우승했다.

박태환은 이에 앞서 펼쳐진 남자 자유형 100ｍ에서 48초85의 기록으로 1위를 차지했다.

전날 열린 자유형 800ｍ에서도 한국신기록을 세우고 우승했다.

박태환은 주종목인 400ｍ 예선에서 4위에 그쳐 7번 레인에서 결선을 뛰었다.

박태환은 자유형 100ｍ 결선이 끝나고 불과 40분 만에 400ｍ 경기에 나서 체력적으로 힘들 것으로 우려됐으나 출발부터 치고 나간 뒤 터치패드를 찍을 때까지 한 번도 선두를 놓치지 않았다.

박태환은 경기를 마친 후 취재진에게 "100ｍ를 앞에 뛰고 400ｍ 경기를 하니까 아무래도 체력적인 것도 그렇고 많이 힘들었던 것 같다"며 "하지만 잘 마무리한 것 같아 기분이 좋다"고 말했다.

그는 "금메달을 딴 것도 기분이 좋지만 기록도 잘 나왔다"며 "특히 이런 국제 대회에서 세계적인 선수들과 경쟁하는 것이 저한테는 올림픽 이전에 좋은 경험이 될 것 같다"고 강조했다.

박태환 선수팀은 "박태환이 대회 바로 전날 장시간 비행기를 타고 이곳에 온데다 오늘은 자유형 100ｍ와 400ｍ 경기를 하루에 하는 등 숨 가쁜 일정을 소화하고 있다"면서 "모두 훈련과정"이라고 설명했다.

박태환은 그러나 자유형 100ｍ에서 이번 대회에서 우승했으나 올림픽 출전자격 기준인 48초82를 넘지 못해 출전권을 얻지는 못했다.

선수팀은 이에 대해 "자유형 100ｍ는 런던 올림픽을 앞두고 주종목인 자유형 200ｍ 경기와 관련해 스피드 점검차원에서 출전한 것"이라고 덧붙였다.

박태환은 2일 남자 자유형 200ｍ에 나서 대회 4관왕에 도전한다.
