Libyan Foreign Minister Ashour Bin Khayal will visit Korea next week for talks mainly aimed at strengthening economic cooperation between the two nations, officials said Thursday.

Khayal is scheduled to arrive in Seoul on Sunday and hold talks with Korean Foreign Minister Kim Sung-hwan on Tuesday during the four-day visit, ministry spokesman Cho Byung-jae told reporters.

The Libyan minister also plans to meet with Prime Minister Kim Hwang-sik and senior officials at the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs, Cho said.

The foreign ministers are expected to discuss "a wide range of issues including reconstruction projects in Libya," Cho said.

Khayal had served as Libya's first ambassador to Korea, Cho said.

Libya's nine-month civil war ended last October with the capture and killing of Moammar Gadhafi, who had ruled there for more than four decades.

With Gadhafi gone, foreign companies, including Korean builders and trading firms, are competing to help further develop the oil-rich nation. (Yonhap)
