Ex-gangster arrested for killing wife, other family for insurance

A former gangster has been arrested on suspicion of killing his wife, brother and brother-in-law in order to receive insurance money after disguising their deaths as accidents, police said Thursday.

The 46-year-old man surnamed Park is also accused of trying to kill his lover's husband, who was left with a disability after two years in the hospital, according to police at the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency.

Park allegedly received a total of 2 billion won (US$1.74 million) in insurance money for the disguised murders.

He is accused of first killing his wife in 1996 by asking a friend to strangle her to death inside a car. Police said he then drove the car into the friend's car in order to claim his wife had been killed in the crash. An insurance company paid him 145 million won in compensation.

Two years later, Park received 600 million won for the death of his brother, which he also disguised as the result of a car accident, police said.

The third alleged murder came in 2006, when he colluded with the husband of his new wife's sister to kill the wife's younger brother.

That plot earned him 1.25 billion won in insurance money after he drove the dead body into a bridge post.

Also that year, Park and his accomplice are suspected of colluding with Park's lover to kill her husband by running over him.

Police said Park has admitted to the murder of his wife and the attempted murder of his lover's husband, apparently because the statute of limitations has expired on his wife's case.

However, he has denied the other allegations against him and shown no remorse for his crimes, threatening to take revenge on the investigator in charge of his case after he is released from prison, police said. (Yonhap)

40대男, 교통사고로 위장 20억원 보험금 타내

보험금을 노리고 부인과 처남, 친동생을 살해하고 내연녀의 남편도 살해하려 한 40대 남성이 붙잡혔다.

서울지방경찰청은 친인척 명의로 고액의 생명보험에 가입한 뒤 부인과 동생, 처남 등 3명을 살해하고 교통사고로 위장해 20억원 상당의 보험금을 편취한 혐의(살인 등)로 박모(46)씨 등 3명을 구속했다고 21일 밝혔다.

경찰에 따르면 경기도 지역 폭력배 출신인 박씨는 지난 96년 10월 6일 경기 양주시의 복개천 주차장의 차 안에서 부인 김모(당시 29세)씨를 후배인 전모(36)씨를 시켜 목 졸라 살해한 뒤 차를 몰고 나가 전씨의 차와 고의로 충돌해 부인 김씨가 교통사고로 사망한 것처럼 위장, H 보험사로부터 1억4천500만원 상당을 받아냈다.

그러나 박씨가 부인을 살해한 범행은 공소시효가 지났다.

박씨는 98년 7월에는 수익자를 자신으로 해서 동생 박모(당시 28세)씨 명의로 보험상품 3개에 가입하고 같은 해 9월19일 경기 양주시에서 같이 차를 타고 있던 동생을 살해한 뒤 차를 몰고 중앙선을 넘어 건너편에 있던 차를 들이받아 동생이 사고로 사망한 것처럼 위장해 D보험사에서 6억원 상당을 지급받아 편취한 혐의를 받고 있다.

박씨는 이어 2006년에는 재혼한 처의 남동생인 이모(당시 32세) 명의로 사망시 고액이 지급되는 보험에 가입하고 수익자를 장모로 해놓은 뒤 같은 해 4월13일 손아래 동서 신모(41)씨와 함께 이씨를 둔기로 살해하고 다음날 오전 2시 자신의 차에 이씨를 태우고 경기 양주시 봉양교 교각을 들이받아 교통사고로 이씨가 사망한 것으로 위장했다. 박씨는 이를 통해 3개 보험사로부터 12억5천만원 상당의 보험금을 장모 명의의 계좌로 받아 가로챈 혐의도 받고 있다.

이와 함께 박씨는 2006년에 내연 관계에 있던 최모(41ㆍ여)씨의 남편 김모(41)씨를 상대로도 교통사고를 위장해 보험금을 타내려고 최씨 및 손아래 동서 신씨와 공모해 김씨를 차로 들이받아 살해하려 했으나 미수에 그쳤다. 김씨는 숨지지는 않았으나 2년간 입원하고 5급 장애 판정을 받았다.

경찰은 올해 3월 박씨의 지난 범행에 관한 제보를 받고 수사에 착수, 박씨가 부인, 동생, 처남 등 피해자 명의로 고액 보험에 가입해 보험료를 자신이 내고 이들이 숨지자 20억원 상당의 보험금을 수령해 미리 준비한 계좌로 분산 이체해 18억원 가량을 사용한 사실과 이씨의 통화기록 등을 조사해 박씨 등을 검거했다.

경찰은 박씨가 공소시효가 지난 부인 김씨 살해와 살인미수에 그친 내연녀 남편 상대 범행만 시인하고 동생과 처남 살해 혐의는 부인하면서 거짓말탐지기 조사도 거부하고 있다며 박씨가 범행을 뉘우치지 않고 담당 형사에게 '감방 갔다 나오면 꼭 찾아오겠다'고 협박하기도 했다고 전했다. (연합뉴스)
