Elementary schools in Seoul are admitting fewer students due to the low birthrate, opening only one class for first graders, the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education said Wednesday.
Six of the elementary schools in the Seoul region had fewer than 20 new students entering the school and three will have first grade student numbers for only one class. Other schools will also have mostly two classes for first graders.
The three are Kyodong Elementary School in Jongno-gu with only 12 new students, and Bukansan Elementary School in Eunpyeong-gu and Eonnam Elementary School in Seocho-gu with 23 students each.
The education office requires schools to open new classes for each grade if the number of students exceeds 27.
The number of elementary school students has kept falling in Seoul to 535,000 this year from 762,000 in 2001.
