A hot spell is gripping the nation, with heat warnings being issued in almost all parts of the Korean Peninsula.
The Korea Meteorological Administration issued an intensive heat warning for Seoul, the wider capital district, western Gangwon and North Jeolla Provinces, Monday, the first of its kind this year.
The warning is given when midday highs of 33 degrees Celsius or higher are expected for at least two days, along with a heat index, which combines air temperature and relative humidity, of 32 degrees or higher.
The highs in many regions, such as Seoul, Suwon and Chuncheon, shot up over 33 degrees Monday.
“Hot weather is forecast to continue through Tuesday. Elderly citizens and children are advised to avoid outdoor activities and drink more water than usual,” a weatherman said.
Following the warning, the government had rescue workers of the National Emergency Management Agency prepare ice packs to help people suffering from heat stroke. The food authorities have also strengthened supervision on facilities providing meals which are vulnerable to food poisoning amid high temperatures.
From Wednesday, a rain front is expected to move up the peninsula with the onset of the rainy season. Central regions, including Seoul, are likely to see rain.
“The rain front is expected to hover over the country until Sunday, bringing rain all over the country except for Jeju Island,” the weather agency said.
