Two soldiers guarding the southern coast of Gyodong Island in Incheon, 80 kilometers west of Seoul, fired their K-2 rifles at the Asiana Airlines flight for about 10 minutes at dawn on Friday, the source said.
They are thought to have fired a total of 99 rounds toward the South Korean plane.
At the time, the plane was making its descent into Incheon International Airport, carrying about 119 flight crew and passengers from China, according to other sources.
The airliner was undamaged as it was about 500 to 600 meters out of the range of the K-2 rifles, the military source said.
"When the plane, which the guards said they had never seen before, was approaching, the guards misidentified it as a plane from the North Korean air force and shot at it," the source said.
The soldiers claimed the airplane was flying north of the normal route, but Asiana Airlines said the plane never went off course.
"We checked yesterday through the air force and the airport control center to make sure there were no abnormalities such as being off course," a company official said.
The incident came amid lingering tensions over Pyongyang's two deadly attacks on the South last year that killed 50 South Koreans.
The North recently threatened to break off ties with South Korea and to retaliate against Seoul for anti-Pyongyang psychological warfare.
The Marine Corps said it will intensify educating its guards on how to identify civilian flights to prevent any recurrence while asking civilian flights not to deviate from set courses. (Yonhap)
교동도 인근서..."北 공군기로 오인, 피해없어"
軍 "평소보다 북쪽 비행한 듯" vs. 아시아나 "정상항로"
인천시 강화군 교동도에 주둔하는 해병대 초병들이 지난 17일 새벽 우리 민항기를 북한 공군기로 오인해 총격을 가하는 사건이 발생했다.
해병대 관계자는 18일 "어제 새벽 4시께 교동도 남쪽 해안에서 경계를 서던 해병 2사단 5연대 51중대 초병들이 남쪽 주문도 상공을 비행하는 아시아나항공 여객기를 향해 K-2 소총으로 10분간 대공 경계 사격을 했다"고 밝혔다.
해안가 초소에서 경계근무를 서던 초병 2명은 개인화기인 K-2 소총으로 민항기를 향해 공포탄 2발을 포함해 총 99발을 발사했던 것으로 전해졌다.
이 관계자는 "당시 민항기는 K-2 소총의 유효 사거리인 500∼600ｍ보다 떨어진 상공에서 비행하고 있어 직접적인 피해는 없었다"면서 "초병들이 평소 주문도쪽에서 못 보던 비행기가 가까이 나타나자 북한 공군기로 오인해 사격한 것으로 파악됐다"고 설명했다.
중국 청두(成都)에서 승객 110명과 승무원 등 119명을 태운 아시아나항공 여객기는 당시 인천공항에 착륙하기 위해 고도를 낮춘 상태였던 것으로 알려졌다.
해당 항공기는 군의 오인사격 당시 5천피트(1천524㎞) 이상의 고도를 유지하고 있었던 것으로 알려졌다. K-2소총의 최대사거리가 3천300ｍ인 점을 감안하며 사고로 이어질 수도 있었던 상황이었다.
이 관계자는 "항공기의 북쪽 비행 한계선이 주문도 남쪽에 있는 것으로 안다"면서 "아시아나항공 측에서는 항로를 이탈하지 않았다고 하지만 초병들의 얘기를 들어보면 여객기가 평소보다 북쪽으로 비행한 것 같다"고 덧붙였다.
그러나 아시아나항공 측은 정상항로로 운항 중이었다고 밝혀 논란이 일 것으로 보인다.
아시아나항공 관계자는 "공군과 공항관제소를 통해 항로 이탈과 같은 특이사항이 없었음을 어제 확인했다"면서 "교동도 초소와 비행기 간 거리가 워낙 떨어져 있어서 승무원이나 승객 모두 이런 총격 사실조차 모르고 있었다"고 말했다.
초병들은 오인 사격 후 5~10분 내에 상부에 상황을 보고했고 이는 전ㆍ후방 상황전파 체계인 고속지령대를 통해 해당 사단과 해병대사령부, 합참 등에 동시에 전파된 것으로 전해졌다.
군은 공군 중앙방공통제소(MCRC)를 통해 오전 4시25분께 해당 항공기가 민간항공기라는 사실을 파악했으며, 4시40분께 아시아나항공 측에도 관련 사실을 설명하고 피해 여부를 문의했던 것으로 알려졌다.
아시아나 항공기는 오전 4시42분께 인천공항에 도착한 것으로 전해졌다.
해병대는 이 같은 사건의 재발을 방지하기 위해 항공사 측에 평시 항로 유지에 대한 협조를 당부하는 한편 초병들에게 민항기 식별 교육을 강화할 방침이다.(연합)
