Question 1. Sentence Correction

Direction: Correct the underlined part

As measured by the Commerce Department, corporate profits peaked in the fourth quarter of 1988 and have slipped since then, as many companies have been unable to pass on higher costs.

A. and have slipped since then, as many companies have been unable to pass on higher costs

B. and have slipped since then, the reason being because many companies have been unable to pass on higher costs

C. and slipped since then, many companies being unable to pass on higher costs

D. but, many companies unable to pass on higher costs, they have slipped since then

E. yet are slipping since then, because many companies were unable to pass on higher costs

Question 2. Critical Reasoning

The violent crime rate (number of violent crimes per 1,000 residents) in Meadowbrook is 60 percent higher now than it was four years ago. The corresponding increase for Parkdale is only 10 percent. These figures support the conclusion that residents of Meadowbrook are more likely to become victims of violent crime than are residents of Parkdale.

The argument above is flawed because it fails to take into account

A. changes in the population density of both Parkdale and Meadowbrook over the past four years

B. how the rate of population growth in Meadowbrook over the past four years compares to the corresponding rate for Parkdale

C. the ratio of violent to nonviolent crimes committed during the past four years in Meadowbrook and Parkdale

D. the violent crime rates in Meadowbrook and Parkdale four years ago

E. how Meadowbrook’s expenditures for crime prevention over the past four years compare to Parkdale’s expenditures

Question 3. Data Sufficiency

Directions: In this problem, a question is followed by two statements containing certain data. You are to determine whether the data provided by the statements are sufficient to answer the question. Choose the correct answer based upon the statement’s data and your knowledge of mathematics.

If r, s, and t are positive integers, when r,s,t are divided by 5, the remainders are the same values, what is the value of t?

1) r+s=t

2) 20≤t≤24

A. statement 1 alone is sufficient, but statement 2 alone is not sufficient to answer the question

B. statement 2 alone is sufficient, but statement 1 alone is not sufficient to answer the question

C. both statements taken together are sufficient to answer the question, but neither statement alone is sufficient

D. each statement alone is sufficient

E. statements 1 and 2 together are not sufficient, and additional data is needed to answer the question

Question 4. Problem Solving

We defined as (nr) is r!(n-r)!, which of the following equal to (103)?

A. (94) B. (710) C. (112) D (133) E. (107)

———————————————————————

Answer to Q1: A

The answer choices C and E are wrong because the adverbial phrase ‘since then’ in each answer choice needs the present perfect tense. And in B, the adverbial clause that begins with ‘because’ is awkwardly modifying a noun ‘the reason’. In addition, the repetition of the subject in the clause of D is needless. So, the answer is A.

Answer to Q2: D

The conclusion given in the statement is ignoring the violent crime rates that existed in Meadowbrook and Parkdale four years ago. Even though the increase rate of the violent crime rate in Meadowbrook is now greater than that in Parkdale, residents of Parkdale can be more likely to become victims of violent crime than those of Meadowbrook if the violent crime rate itself in Parkdale was significantly greater than that in Meadowbrook four years ago. Therefore, the answer is D.

Answer to Q3: C

1) & 2) t=20 sufficient, only 1) t=5,10,15 NOT sufficient only 2) t=20,21 NOT sufficient, therefore the best answer is C.

Answer to Q4: E

(103)=3!(10-3)!=7!(10-7)!=(107), therefore the best answer is E.
