GMAT exercise 38
Question 1. Sentence Correction Direction: Correct the underlined part The commission proposed that funding for the park’s development, which could be open to the public early next year, is obtained through a local bond issue. (a) that funding for the park’s development, which could be open to the public early next year, is (b) that funding for development of the park, which could be open to the public early next year, be (c) funding for the development of the park, perhaps open to the public early next year, to be (d) funds for the park’s development, perhaps open to the public early next year, be (e) development funding for the park, which could be open to the public early next year, is to be Question 2. Critical Reasoning In recent years, many cabinetmakers have been winning acclaim as artists. But since furniture must be useful, cabinetmakers must exercise their craft with an eye to the practical utility of their product. For this reason, cabinetmaking is not art. Which of the following is an assumption that supports drawing the conclusion above from the reason given for that conclusion? (a) Some furniture is made to be placed in museums, where it will not be used by anyone. (b) Some cabinetmakers are more concerned than others with the practical utility of the products they produce. (c) Cabinetmakers should be more concerned with the practical utility of their products than they currently are. (d) An object is not an art object if its maker pays attention to the object’s practical utility. (e) Artists are not concerned with the monetary value of their products. Question 3. Data Sufficiency Directions: In this problem, a question is followed by two statements containing certain data. You are to determine whether the data provided by the statements are sufficient to answer the question. Choose the correct answer based upon the statement’s data and your knowledge of mathematics. For positive integers r and s, is r/s a terminating decimal? 1) s/r is a finite(terminating) decimal. 2) The only prime factors of s are 2 or 5. A. statement 1 alone is sufficient, but statement 2 alone is not sufficient to answer the question B. statement 2 alone is sufficient, but statement 1 alone is not sufficient to answer the question C. both statements taken together are sufficient to answer the question, but neither statement alone is sufficient D. each statement alone is sufficient E. statements 1 and 2 together are not sufficient, and additional data is needed to answer the question Question 4. Problem Solving Which of the following options has(have) the same standard deviation as {x, y, z}? Ⅰ. {0, -x+z,y-x} Ⅱ. {x+1,y+1,z+1} Ⅲ. {2x,2y,2z} A. onlyⅠ B. only Ⅱ C. only Ⅲ D. only Ⅰ, Ⅱ E. Ⅰ, Ⅱ and Ⅲ Answer to Q1 : B In A, the relative clause is awkwardly modifying ‘the park’s development’, not ‘the park’. Meanwhile, ‘open to the public early next year’ is also being misused to modify ‘the park’s development’ in D. And the unidiomatic expression is placed in C in terms of the usage of the verb ‘propose’. In E, ‘that’ as a conjunction is needed in front of the expression and ‘is to be’ should be changed into ‘be’ to make a subjunctive mood in consideration of the verb ‘propose’. So, the answer is B. Answer to Q2 : D An assumption plays the role of linking logically the premise to the conclusion in any statement. Accordingly, the conclusion of the statement is depending on an unseen assumption that nothing created with a view to its usefulness is a work of art. In total, the answer choices except for D are irrelevant in terms of mentioning the relationship between art and the practical utility of product. Answer to Q3: B Because a terminating decimal, for example, 0.2=1/5, 0.5=1/2, 0.21=21/(2^2)(5^2) have the only prime factors 2 or 5, con 2) is sufficient, con 1) s=5, r=2 yes, but s=3, r=2 no, NOT sufficient. Therefore the best answer is B. Answer to Q4: D Because the standard deviation is the average(arithmetic mean) of the square of the difference between the average(arithmetic mean) and the variables, a set with parallel moving of elements of the set have the same standard deviation. Therefore Ⅰ since {x,y,z}-->{x-x,y-x,z-x}={0,y-x,-x+z}, Ⅱ since {x,y,z}-->{x+1,y+1,z+1} have the same standard deviation as the set {x,y,z}. The best answer is D.
