Artist creates sculptures from bananas

The detailed works of fruity―featuring the faces of Elvis and Davey Jones from Pirates of The Caribbean―are carved with a toothpick and a spoon.

But there’s no room for mistakes; each piece is complete in about half an hour, before the bananas start to rot, the British Daily Mail reported on Monday.

When the sculptures are complete, Japanese artist Keisuke Yamada photographs them and later eats them.

Since posting pictures, the 23-year-old electrician has developed a cult following and gets new ideas from his fans’ suggestions.

He has made 11 pieces so far, including a dragon and ghoulish skulls.

“I started making them about two weeks ago and since posting pictures of them online, they have really taken off,” said Yamada.

“This all began when I peeled a banana and though it might be interesting to carve a face into the fruit. The first one was the face of someone with a smile. I was surprised by how many people liked it so then I just started making more.”

일본 예술가 케이슈케 야마다, 23, 가 바나나로 사람 얼굴을 조각한 모습이 인터넷에 공개돼 화제다.

야마다가 바나나를 이용해 엘비스프레슬리와 케리비안의 해적에 등장한 데이비 존스 등 사람얼굴을 조각한 모습이 인터넷에 공개됐다고 영국의 데일리 메일이 25일 보도했다.

바나나는 재료의 특성상 주의해야 할 점들이 있다. 상할 수 있기 때문에 조각은 30분안에 끝내야 한다. 완성된 작품 역시 따로 보관이 힘들기 때문에 사진으로 증거를 남기고 나머지는 먹어치워야 한다.

그는 "원재료가 바나나인만큼 조각에 쓰이는 도구도 일상생활에서 사용하는 이쑤시개나 숟가락들이 주로 쓰인다"고 전했다. 이어 "2주전에 작품을 완성해 사진을 인터넷에 게재했는데 작품을 본 사람들이 내게 영감을 줘 많은 도움이 됐다"며 조언 해 준 사람들에게 고마워했다.
