Rich list shows Britain’s wealthiest defy recession

The Britain's richest people have defied the double-dip recession to become even richer over the past year, according to the annual Sunday Times Rich List.

The newspaper's research reveals the combined worth of the country's 1,000 wealthiest people is £414bn, up 4.7 percent.

It means their joint wealth has passed the level last seen in 2008, before the financial crash, to set a new record.

Top spot for the eighth straight year is held by Indian steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, 61, with £12.7bn.

There are now 77 billionaires on the list, with individuals needing to have at least £72m to make the top 1,000.

The richest billionaire of all, Mr Mittal, retains his position despite seeing 27% of his family fortune wiped out in the last 12 months because of a drop in the share price of their steel producing business.

The Mittal family have held the number one spot in the list since 2005.

Another person who has made money from the metal industry, Arsenal shareholder Alisher Usmanov, is second with £12.3bn, while Chelsea owner and oil baron Roman Abramovich is third with £9.5bn, despite being £800m down on last year.

The richest woman is former Miss UK Kirsty Bertarelli, who shares a £7.4bn fortune with her husband Ernesto, while the Duke of Westminster's property portfolio makes him worth £7.3bn.

Several leading British entrepreneurs, who are further down the list, have seen their wealth increase this year.

Diamond retailer Laurence Graff's wealth has risen to £3,300m while Sir Anthony Bamford, owner of the JCB earth-moving machinery firm, has seen his fortune go up to £3,150m.

Inventor Sir James Dyson, who created the bagless vacuum cleaner, has also seen his wealth increase, to £2,650m. (BBC)

극심한 경기침체에도 불구하고 영국 부호들의 재산이 지난해 크게 증가한 것으로 나타났다.

일요신문 선데이타임스가 29일(현지시간) 발표한 `부자 명단 2012'에 따르면 상위 1천명의 재산을 합하면 4천140억 파운드(한화 약 787조원)로 1년전에 비해 4.7% 늘어났다.

금융위기 이전인 2008년의 상위 1천명 재산 총액 4천128억 파운드를 넘어 사상 최고를 기록했다.

이 신문은 영국이 더블 딥(이중 경기침체)에 빠져있는 것과 무관하게 부자들의 재산은 증가하는 `부익부' 현상이 나타났다고 풀이했다.

세계 최대 철강 회사인 미탈 스틸의 락시미 미탈이 127억 파운드(24조1천300억원)로 최고 부자로 나타났다.

미탈은 지난 1년간 철강업의 침체로 일가의 재산이 48억 파운드(27%)나 감소했지만 2005년부터 7년째 최고 부자 자리를 지켰다.

러시아 철강 재벌로 잉글랜드 프리미어리그 아스널 주주인 알리셰르 우스마노프가 123억 파운드(23조3천700억원)로 바짝 뒤를 쫓았다.

3위는 러시아 석유재벌로 프리미어리그 첼시구단을 소유하고 있는 로만 아브라모비치가 차지했다. 그의 재산은 95억 파운드(18조500억원)로 집계됐다.

선데이타임스는 매년 국적을 불문하고 영국에 근거를 두고 있는 사람들의 재산을 취합해 `부자 명단'을 발표한다.

영국 태생으로 가장 재산이 많은 사람은 웨스트민스터 공작으로 73억 5천만파운드(14조원)로 7위를 기록했다.

영국의 대표적인 귀족인 웨스트민스터 공작은 런던 등에 대대로 물려받은 수많은 부동산을 소유하고 있다.

먼지봉투가 없는 청소기를 개발한 제임스 다이슨의 재산은 12억 파운드 늘어난 26억5천만 파운드(5조원)로 집계됐다.

문화 예술계 인사중에는 비틀스 멤버 폴 매카트니(69)가 미국의 트럭 운송업자의 딸인 낸시 쉬벨(51)과 세번째 결혼식을 올리면서 재산을 4억9천500만 파운드에서 6억6천500만 파운드(1조2천640억원)로 늘렸다.

해리포터 작가 JK 롤링의 재산은 지난해 3천만 파운드가 증가한 5억6천만 파운드(1조640억원)로 148위를 차지했다.

스마트폰의 확산으로 음원 서비스업체인 스포티파이(Spotify)를 소유한 대니얼 EK도 축구선수인 데이비드 베컴과 나란히 1억9천만 파운드(3천600억원)로 재산순위 395위에 이름을 올렸다.

재산을 집계하고 분석한 필립 베레스퍼드는 스카이뉴스와의 인터뷰에서 "긴축의 시대를 맞아 정부가 `모두 함께 허리띠를 졸라매자'고 외치고 있지만 부자들은 더 부자가 되고 있다"면서 "하지만 그들이 영국에 투자하기 때문에 비난만 해서는 안된다"고 말했다.
