Seoullo 7017, an overpass transformed into a park near Seoul Station, is celebrating its grand opening Saturday. It will open to the public at 10 a.m., after an opening ceremony that begins at 8 a.m.
The pedestrian-friendly park stretches for about a kilometer and links seven surrounding areas, including Seoul Station and Namdaemun Market, to 12 pedestrian walkways. It features over 24,085 plants representing 228 species of trees, shrubs and flowers found in and outside Korea.
The "70" in the name refers to the year 1970 when the Seoul Station flyover was built, while "17" is a reference to the number of walkways connected to it and the year 2017, when it was completed. The overpass also includes a flower shop, a gallery, a souvenir shop and various restaurants.
The Korea Times photo-journalist Shin Hyun-chul looked over the nation's first overpass-turned-park from the rooftop of a nearby building.
