Over 800 children under the age of 13 are classified by banks as VIP customers because they hold at least one billion won ($1.88 million) in their personal accounts, according to the Financial Supervisory Service (FSS).Rep. Kim Tae-hwan of the ruling Saenuri Party released the information in a bid to highlight the growing economic gap among young Koreans.
"Just like with adults, there is a concentration of wealth and a concentration of poverty," Kim said.
The child with the largest bank account had 29 billion won ($2.7 million) in Hana Bank. The second richest had 10.3 billion won stowed away with Shinhan Bank.
"We need to look at where these large figures come, determine if there are problems regarding tax declarations or problems in the accumulation of the wealth," Kim said.
1억이상 예금 보유 '부자어린이' 859명
초등학생(13세) 이하 어린이 중 1억원 이상을 은행에 예금 중인 'VIP 고객'이 859명에 달하며, 이들의 예금액은 총 1천589억원에 달하는 것으로 나타났다.
가장 많은 예금을 보유한 어린이는 30억원을 갖고있는 것으로 파악됐다.
국회 정무위원회 소속 새누리당 김태환 의원이 2일 금융감독원에서 제출받은 '초등학생 이하 어린이 예금보유 현황'에 따르면, 올해 8월말 기준 13세 이하 어린이가 보유 중인 계좌는 총 256만9천312개였으며 예금액은 1조9천967억원으로 계좌당 평균 예금액은 77만7천원이었다.
이중 1억원 이상이 들어있는 경우는 859명(0.03%)에 불과했지만 이들의 예금총액은 1천589억원이어서 전체 어린이 예금액(1조9천967억원)의 8%를 보유하고 있었다. 이들의 1인당 평균 예금액은 1억8천500만원으로 전체 평균보다 259배나 많았다.
가장 많은 예금을 보유한 어린이는 하나은행 계좌에 29억9천100만원을 보유하고 있었고, 다음은 신한은행 계좌에 10억3천300만원을 보유한 어린이였다.
김 의원은 '성인들과 마찬가지로 어린이들도 소수에게 '부 쏠림' 현상이 나타났다'며 '초등학생 이하 어린이들인만큼 증여세 신고 등 예금 형성과정에 문제가 없는지 금융당국에서 살펴봐야 한다'고 말했다.
