"Pyeongchang Seoju" is distilled from potatoes cultivated in the Gangwon Province city. An official from the presidential office Cheong Wa Dae said Moon chose the potatoes as the Lunar New Year holiday season from Feb. 15 to 18 falls during the PyeongChang Olympic Games (Feb. 9-25).
The gifts will be delivered to citizens of national merit, family members of veterans, socially vulnerable groups, retired politicians and public servants.
President Moon has been preparing gifts for citizens to celebrate major holiday seasons. During the Korean Thanksgiving Day holidays last October, he prepared five different gift packs containing pine nuts from Pyeongchang, rice from Icheon, sesame seeds from Yecheon, walnuts from Yeongdong and black rice from Jindo.
South Koreans have traditionally prepared gifts during the two holiday seasons to present to family elders, relatives and friends. Weeks before the holidays, markets begin to display various gift packs.
"The potato wine, which will be useful at a memorial service table for late ancestors, was President Moon's idea," the official said, referring to the holiday custom that families with Confucian beliefs hold traditional rites to commemorate the death of ancestors.
The wine has 13 percent alcohol content. Two 300-millimeter bottles cost 5,000 won ($4.70) while the 700-millimeter bottle is 12,000 won.
Along with the wine, Moon prepared other gift packs containing products that were recommended by local agricultural crop distributors.
