Many Korean voters are eagerly awaiting presidential election day on May 9 because it was declared a holiday, a move meant to lure people to polling stations. But there is another reason: a cash gift.
A political activist has launched the "Vote For Korea" online campaign, promising he will randomly select people who vote and present them with cash gifts up to 5 million won ($4,393).
Campaign organizer Yoon Byung-joon said it aims to encourage people to "take a minute out of their holiday and come out and vote."
Yoon will select several winners who provide a photo of the voting stamp on their hands via a special website associated with instant messenger service Kakao Talk. He has raised 3.14 million won through donations from campaign supporters.
Yoon is reportedly a computer programmer working at a tech startup. He launched the campaign after being inspired by an idea politician-turned-author Ryu Si-min suggested on a TV talk show last year.
